A racist xenophobic position would be to argue for no immigration whatsoever (or close to). A racist has a problem with one immigrant and has a problem with 1000 immigrants.

Most people on here argue for a managed approach.

They are therefore not racist in outlook.

    Fact.

We have had significant levels of immigration for the best part of a decade now.

The pro immigration theory would suggest our economy is using this to grow GDP.

Well, growth is practically non-existent, which debunks that one.

We already have a managed approach.

Our immigration controls for non-EU citizens are among the toughest in the World, and of course EU citizens have the right to live and work here just as we do to live and work there. And some 1.8 million of us do so.

    I disagree.

    Statements like this....
I DO NOT want my culture anymore diluted .

    And this....

It doesn't debunk it at all.

In fact, growth and unemployment would be WORSE without immigration.

    From earlier in the thread....

"immigration acts as an economic stimulus, pushing total employment levels higher and dole claimant numbers lower than they would otherwise have been.

"Perhaps surprisingly," their economists said, "the interaction between migrant inflows and GDP emerges as positive, indicating that during periods of lower growth, migrant inflows are associated with ... slower [dole] claimant growth than would otherwise have occurred."

Some people who have an anti open border position are bigoted.

To say all people with that view are bigots, is a bigoted comment in itself.

    Totally agree.

However, as The Telegraph article pointed out....

it is simply not true to suggest that "foreigners are stealing our jobs" or that immigration is responsible for unemployment.

And those who do, in defiance of the evidence, make me wonder about their real motivations.

China's immigration levels put them 185 out of 194 in the league table, almost down at the bottom.

They have just recorded almost 8% growth, down from double digit growth achieved over recent years.

Growth can be achieved without immigration.

Mass automation and technological innovation power growth. In less than one generations time, computers will answer phone calls like people; and robots will be able to do tasks which currently need people.

As an example let's take food. By the time the 90s arrived one of Bernard Matthews poultry processing plant needed a total staff complement of 4. Yes, thats just 4 people, to run the entire plant.

We don't need people in volume numbers. We need a smaller set of technical innovators.

Would not controlled immigration (picking the most useful to the UK) be a much better option than an open border?

    Of course.

Just look at Canada's recent approach to building up their presence in the Games industry. Videogames are worth billions of dollars a year. They have actively recruited from places like the UK and Europe.

Check out that report. $1.7 billion from 16,000 employed there (it's now even higher).

Look at the executive summary for projected growth rate.

Targetted recruitment is extremely successful and profitable.

    .

And that statistic, combined with the low birth rates of the "one child policy" is about to bite China badly.
    China's Demographic Time Bomb

BEIJING — Proof is multiplying that China is aging at an alarming pace.

But more worrying is how the statistics are set to unfold in the future: China's elderly demographic will surpass 200 million in just three years, and top 300 million by 2025. By 2042, more than 30% of China's total population will be over 60.

In 2010, for every five working-age people, there was one old person being supported. According to the new estimates, that ratio will drop to three working-age people for each elderly person by 2020.
    http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2091308,00.html

China is a dead man walking, in economic terms, as the inevitable population decline and increasing dependency ratio will impose extremely harsh burdens of care on the young.

China will sart declining economically from the 2020's onward.

They need either a baby boom, or truly massive immigration, from then on to save themselves.

Hamishes interests appear to be more about keeping the pay rates for cleaners in Aberdeen down though.
