If I employ staff, can I ban them from wearing perfume/aftershave?

I'm not allergic to it, just hate it and its artificial smell plus its made of harmful chemicals.

  • I used to work as a nurse, when I trained I was told not to smell of anything strong such as smoke, BO, perfume or anything that would make a patient or anyone else feel nauseous or unwell. Some people are allergic to certian chemicals, or they can prevoke unwanted feelings in people who suffer with their mental health. However, since I first entered a hospital or clinical situation as a 17 year old this rule doesn't seem to apply, plastered on makeup is the norm smoke the only air possible and majority rules. I used to look after babies and children under 16 years, what u do in your personal time is your own business, but in work, you have to be professional and consider others needs and the situation you are working in, hope this helps, I wouldn't like a premature baby breathing in my BO, stale perfume or deodorant or cigarette smoke, not that I smoke, but I no longer work as a nurse, maybe because I'm too sensitive.

    Is this for real?

Would you rather them smell of BO too because deodorant and the like are also artificial and made of chemicals.

No thats not my point. Deodorants contain alluminium, which is actually toxic to the body. Do you really wonder why asthma rates are increasing yearly and men and women have around 50% chance of getting cancer these days. There are natural and organic alternatives out there eg the crystal spring rock deodorant.

I HATE perfume and aftershaves, its disgusting. I hate the artificial smell and the way it sticks in the air and to peoples clothes. I like the smell of natural things like fresh strawberries not toxic chemicals.

What is your point? You want someone to smell of BO?

I don't think you can ban perfume.

    What about make up?

I can't stand the smell of cosmetics . The darker orange the foundation the stronger it smells.. I've had to get out of lifts before now, change bus/train seat and even got out of a friends car as I thought I was going to gag

However I accept other people's right to wear cosmetics

You dont have to smell of BO because you dont use aftershave... unless youre the type of skanky person who sprays instead of showers...

Oh and the employer can ban whatever they want, within reason
  • I have severe allergies and a suppressed immune system due to chemo ..so am now hyper allergic to chemicals so have to watch out for chemicals .

However if you ban deoderant and insist on soap then you could find yourself landed with a case for potential discrimination for people who use other cleansers e.g emollients as they cant use soap.

Also no excuses (i promise i shower everyday ) need to with my medical conditions but some sweaty betties are sweaty cause of medical reasons not cause they are filthy so and so's !!

Personally im weird i have to use hyper allergenic emollient cleanser no soap ....but can wear some perfume but am acutely aware i may perspire ..a little...due to side effects of meds so keep a bottle of perfume nearby at work (as i cant have multiple showers a day whilst at work!)

And no jc808 you can smell of BO if you spray as well as shower. i am not "skanky" i am ill ! ...also i think im hyper aware of it .. I shower daily but cant use most deoderant / anti persperant ..only some perfume I have asked colleagues up front if they think i have smelt bad on certain days when i feel rough and they have always said no but i launch out the perfume anyway as there are no shower facilities in the office and id rather pungent someone out with perfume than BO chuckle !!!
