What job do you propose he does? Head on up the chimneys?

If Flyboy11 had done this, I would certainly be considering it.

But this is one of the reasons why I have not set his X-box up for Live. Letting an eleven year old unfettered access to open networking with other people on the internet, is a recipe for these sorts of events.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

Flyboy11 comes to work with me and earns his pocket money, albeit, not at five pounds an hour.

Kids are great. As long as you teach them well !

My daughter is 12, she knows full well why websites ask for card details. She has her own account and debit card, she would never give her details or use mine. It's the parents fault if this sort of thing happens.

Why not just come out and say it: You had nothing to contribute but you just wanted to tell everyone you think you're a better parent than the OP.

Except for all the stuff your daughter gets up to that you don't know about.

Does a 12 year old need a debit card ? Would kids not learn more if they had a weekly pocket money allowance so they could learn how to budget.
Lets teach them to count first before we give them a calculator.
I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.

Why does cash in a piggy bank at home teach a child to budget, but not cash in a bank account? Plenty children have bank accounts with cards.

I think the whole family's handling of the situation suggests that they are very good parents...grown up discussions (after the dust settled of course), the son's heartfelt apology/suggested consequences and the parents' level headed (at least from my perspective) response. He is using his own toys & money to repay wheat he took and is losing out on a party as punishment. It sounds like he got carried away but at least he was honest about it when busted rather than pretending that he didnt understand how it had happened.

Kids are indeed great, but they are still kids!

I did not mention anything about saving money in a piggy bank.

From my memory as a yoof (back when you couldn't get a debit card until you were at least 16), and from seeing my nephew and nieces with actual money:

Having physical money instils upon you the value of money because you have a budget that is set in stone. If I went out with £50 I'd saved from my jobs, I had £50. I couldn't jam a card into a machine and skirt my budget spending money that I can't see. You have what's in your pocket, and if you can't afford it, tough.

My oldest niece is 7, and if she goes to the shop for a treat, she knows what money means. It's hard enough for older people to truly grasp how much they're spending on cards, I dread to think how meaningless the process would be for 11 year olds.
