Did 27 holes and 3 seeds in each today. May do another half doz tomorrow after I cut the grass. Then get my Runner Bean canes and the pea net up. That'll be enough for tomorrow methinks.
I didn't manage to plant/sow anything today due to everyone being out in their gardens and as the fences are only 3' tall it turned into catch up on the last 6 months of general life and who's growing what this year etc.
But I did get to lift the compost bin offnearly 2 hours of sieving (my back didn't know what hit it!) and I have 4 rubble bags of lovely stuff
Moved the bin to the left of where it was and put the remainder back again. Had more of that than usual this year guess down to the longer and colder winter.
I have 2 bags already of sieved garden soil so was going to mix it together 50/50 HM compost and use that for parsnips if that's suitable John?
To give my back a rest, weeded the front garden bed and tried to pull the montbretia out, it's everywhere, and in full shade so it just ends up flopping over and looking a mess, might have to get the weed killer on it.0 -

I must admit, I'm quite an anti-social gardener so tend to wait for all clear before popping out to tend to my weeds. It's a good job my neighbours are mostly out!
Today was a beautiful day - Spring was definitely in the air and we have had sunshine on and off throughout. We had a very successful shopping trip into town on a hoop hunt. Finally found some stripey 50ish-cm hoops in a toy shop and to risk having the same issue in the future, we bought 8  They're a little multicoloured, but at £1.49 a pop they're perfect. And hey, they brighten up the garden!
I've weeded and raked over my main bed and given all the large pots a bit of a shuffle. I also put up most of the bean canes ready for when the time comes and OH helped me tie the hoops near the top. Although, I've now read that peas need a bit more support so I'll have to go and get some chicken wire or something similar and reconstruct one of the towers. Oops
Last thing I did was put some string down to start marking out my squares again and it's reminding me of summer! I can't wait.
If it's dry again tomorrow I hope to sow some parsnip seeds. I've started hardening off my mange tout and french beans in the hope of starting some early. We're not past our last frost yet but if they take a hit I won't be too sad - plenty more seeds in the packet and plenty of time for both of those.0 -
Thanks for the snow code link Annie. I too used to use either salt or coal ash when clearing paths. Unfortunately I am no longer able to clear the snow as my driveway is quite steep (block paving over the whole garden, not my choice but the previous owners). I feel rather guilty about not being able to clear at least a narrow path to my front door but my daughter says I would be foolish to try.
I take enough tumbles already due to vertigo and I`m rushing rapidly towards 80 now so maybe I should just let the snow lie. (No little children around to sweep it for me, even if they wanted to, so I just keep my fingers crossed that nobody slips). Anyway the snow has all gone from my area now after an overnight fall about a fortnight ago which soon disappeared.
Still a bitterly cold wind though so still no work getting done outside. Not sure if I will be growing anything much this year if it doesn`t warm up soon. I am not complaining though as I can sit inside in the warm painting pictures of flowers instead of planting them. I am now surrounded by flowers that will last all year and not die off in the winter.0 -

How nice was it being outside today? Have been under the weather for a couple of weeks and I felt so much better for being outside most of the day. I'm convinced it the poor weather making me feel poorly! ;-)
Anyhoo managed to plant a new rhubarb, move a hydrangea to a bed, widen a bed, mown the lawn and general pottering and tidying! Best off all my wash load dried!!
Hope tomorrow is just as good for everyone.2019, move forward with positivity! I am the opposite of Eyeore :rotfl:0 -

Redlass I would love privacy to garden but with 3' tall fences it's impossible, especially as I'm responsibly for getting them all into gardening. Hubby can tell when I need rescuing, he calls me on my mobile and I pretend its a call I need to take and nip indoors for a cuppadjohn2002uk wrote: »I would have done that too but my compost was a bit too wet for sifting so kept it for the beans. I've only ever used soil in the past and it's been fine.
Thanks John. Hubby has dug out the crowbar for me to use, that should make deep enough cones.0 -

You can get them from
www.bigvits.co.uk
the only company in the UK selling this dosage.
Annie. My crowbar is 5ft but I only went down 18ins. Isn't he going to do the holes for you?0 -

If you think it's the winter weather making you feel poorly, it is a recognised thing that many people suffer from. I have found that Vitamin D3 supplement helps a lot. I take one Vitamin D-3, 5000iu Capsule each day and I have certainly felt better even through the grottiest weather this Winter.

I take Vit D too every winter and no he's not doing it if I can.
He may pay the mortgage but the gardens mine, unless of course I can't do it, then he's allowed to help
edit: That's a great site John much cheaper than me buying 1000 and taking several pills, thank you.0 -
Pottered about in the garden today and forked over the veg patch. I had new topsoil put on it (1 foot down) but its really compacted and stuck together like clay soil. I hope it gets nice and crumbly once it warms up.
It was so so cold I am not going to put my spuds in got two bags growing in the greenhouse that must be enough for now.
Need to sort out some wire for my fence so I can train my fruit trees. I am such a novice at this but will give it a go as I dont want the trees to overhand my veg patch.
Cold but sunny here the temperature in my greenhouse varies from -1 to 27c. Seeds coming up nicely inside and out.Save £12k in 25 No 49
