Ive never eaten meat subsitute...its just wrong!

Stay away from all of that processed crap

If you like indian food, you should know that 90% of indians eat vegetarian at home.....there is no "chicken curry" thats just been created by takeaways to feed the masses

Authentic indian cuisine is all veggie and the options are huge. you like chickpea's well try sholay

try mutter paneer (the best dish going!)

    chilli paneer

    try saag

    aloo gobi

    musar dahl (thurka dahl)

non indian: pasta, pizza, salads, veggie burders, veggie pies, cheese & onion pasties

    humous

falafels, with greek salad, ranch sauce and feta cheese (you will thank me for that recipe!)

the list is endless for veggies and the food tastes so good

dead animal on a plate with abit of blood?

or some of the above minus the stomach ache?

i know which one i'd choose

    lol

OK - give me your recipes for the mutter paneer and your falafels and accompaniments!

Some veggie recipes do give you tummy ache though, especially if you're not used to things like beans and lentils. But it's a different tummy ache - a good parp and you're back to normal! :rotfl:
  • These still aren't great but they are a good start. Once you get more confident in the kitchen, you'll look at these meals, and the ingredients in them, and think "hmmm, I could easily make this for less money" - and they would taste better.

Personally, I hate the Light Choices - everything tastes strangely sweet?

Agreed - they are not my ideal but when working till late it can be increasingly hard to stick to a healthy diet so for me they work temporarily. Then when I have time I make my own meals (I am a blooming good vegetarian cook :p so it can be done when the time is there).

I am also kitchen-less at the minute so they are easier but that's another story I guess ha

Agreed about the sweetness of light choices! Pretty sure bolognaise shouldn't be that much like splenda!

That reminds me of the time we were in temporary accommodation without a cooker and we lived on microwave meals - it was only meant to be 6 weeks, it turned into 6 months. By month three we were craving home cooked food so we bought a 'lean mean grilling machine' and a three-tier steamer and what a difference it made!

We went from being sluggish and spotty/grey looking to suddenly having loads of energy.

I've just bought a raclette grill so hoping to cook up a swiss storm this weekend!! Luckily I had cooked up a huge amount of lentil and veg stew and veggie chillie's to keep from completely going insane!

Fab idea about the steamer! I have a bamboo one for dumplings etc. but I hadn't even thought to get it out! Great idea

Lol yea thats it...out systems sort themselves out very quickly ;)

I will have to get the muttar paneer recipe from mum

    falafel wraps:

I buy the couldron falafels from asda....they are the tasiest ones (cant be bothered to make my own)

newmans ranch sauce (again from asda....essential!)

    good feta cheese

mild to hot chilli sauce (i use maggi's chill sauce....its the best one tbh)

    lettuece, cucumber, red onion, tomato

    warburtons square wraps (http://www.warburtons.co.uk/lunch/our_products/wraps-amp-thins/white/6-square-ish-wraps)

taziki sauce (you can buy this from asda......but i make my own, its tastier and lasts much longer)

    instructions:

cut lettuce into strips and wash...make sure you squeeze all the water out of it as it wont taste good if its watery.

i finely dice the tomato (i dont use the midle bits just the outside, and i cut it up as small as possible and i dont add much!

cucumbers, dice them...nice decent chunks. same with red onion, its nice to have abit of crunch.

mix together, add diced feta cheese and the ranch sauce....and lettuce

falafels: grill them, and keep turning until they are nice and crispy on the outside, you dont want the too soft, shouldnt take long under grill...10 mins max.

taziki sauce: greek yogurt, lemon, garlic, black pepper, cucmber. dried mint.

with the cucumber you want to cut into half HORIZONTALLY and then scoop out the middle bits as they are too watery for this. then you chop it up and put into food processor with 2-3 cloves of garlic. blend together. add lemon juice. blend abit more....small chunks are fine.

add to yorgurt in a bowl, just a little black pepper ad some dried minti (table spoon or so) and then just mix it all together and leave in fridge.

you can just buy taziki from asda but once you open it you have to throw it away after 2 days as it goes off. but if you make your own you just go with the use by date on the yogurt......which is usually 3 weeks. (so big difference). also you should note that taziki (to me) doesnt taste very nice on its own.......it just works with the falafels cus they are dry!

    the wrap:

just lay it flat out, chop up the falafel (its better if its hot and straight from the grill) i chop it up into small chunks, not too fine. Add a few spons of taziki on top.

then add some salad on top

drize just a little chilli sauce on top (not to much small amount here)

and then you make the wrap up.....fold in the sides, then roll it up from the bottom

This is the number 1 recipe for falafels and you will thank me for this little gem!

people beg me to make it for them all the time now (i stole this recipe from canada)

the thicker the wrap the better (the warburton ones are nice.......but if you can find greek pitta bread.....its much better as its really thick)

dont be using those thin tortilla ones they are crap.

also by the way i have lost weight by eating this and removing the bread or wrap......just the salad, taziki and falafel.....

i lost weight fast like that as there is no carbs in the meal!

being veggie the falafel gives me much needed protein

Hope someone trys it out......let me know what you think

    ;)

    Omnivore diet ftw here!

Pink meat? No way! I'll have my steak red and bloody, ta v much. ;)

I know plenty vegetarians who get stomach aches and most of the ones I know are also anaemic and lacking in protein.

    HBS x

My sister is a vegetarian. She's pale, prone to anaemia, fat and farts a lot. I still love her though. :p

As the old saying goes "If God didn't intend us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them taste so nice."
  • That's just made me chuckle :D

Still a long way to go but hey ho im here for the long haul and every lb counts :) id ideally like to be a size 18 for my birthday in just over a months time and a 16 by summer.. I started at a size 22 and im at the cumfy 20 mark , but these trousers are an 18 and are cumfy. :D.

Mozarella cheese in the pouches in shops reminds me if a testicle in its sack... ;) yum tho.
Gonna head off for a bath in a min and plot tomorrows meals. Treat day tomorrow im allowed a day to eat within reason what i want so i dont go off the rails too much. Sausage is on the agenda :). So is tomato soup i think... No idea what else yet.

Where the old saying says "God", I'd say "evolution" - but I think it's a good point nonetheless ;)

Hi Carrie, well done on your loss so far! Nearly a stone and a half, that's fab!

Couple of comments/suggestions etc from me.

Re: veg - no, I'm not going to nag you to eat it! But just a possibility, have you tried it in a different form e.g. if it's the slimy texture of cooked veg that you don't like, have you tried steamed broccoli or cauliflower for example? Or sweetcorn/raw peppers with your tuna? You might find that makes it seem different to what you think. I use very lightly cooked cauliflower (so it's still crunchy) as a substitute for potato sometimes just for a change.

Also - dunno if you mentioned fruit? Do you like it? Or salad stuff (lettuce, tomato, cucumber?)

For additional protein get yourself some oat bran - it's lovely and really versatile, I tend to just mix it into my yoghurt at breakfast time, but you can make all sorts of things out of it like little pancakes etc.

Try lentils if you haven't, and chick peas. They're a bit like beans in texture, and you can use them in similar ways to how you would use rice, pasta, potatoes or as a meat substitute.
Falafel is a bit like an onion bahjee but made with chickpeas. Really nice!

    Good luck x
