Claiming loss from Royal Mail - New forms

This thread reminds me - I posted a plant off ebay which never arrived. I sent back the form from the website, with a printout showing the value was £5.50, and the postage receipt.

2 weeks later I got a letter back saying they wouldn't compensate me because I didn't obtain a proof of postage.

How a printed receipt with time, date, weight, amount and post office address is not proof of postage, whereas a hand written certificate is, I have no idea. If I'm correct, a receipt isn't even a legal requirement in a shop if you want a refund, as long as you can proove the item was purchased from there.

More's to the point, last time I did the same thing and received a book of 12 stamps.

A follow up letter is going off tonight...

I call 01752 387112 which I believe is Royal Mail customer services in plymouth. I then explain about the item being lost and that I would like to speak to the ebay team. Then explain to the ebay team what has happened and that you would like to put in a claim. They will then fill in the claim form for you.

They ask for the item number, recipients address etc

I have been told that it is easier for them to do the claim via the phone. I usually explain that I will not be sending the cop in incase it gets lost and I have other items on there. You have to make sure that you are able to send them some proof though i.e cop/receipt or tracking number of recorded delivery.

I have done this quite a few times and it has been a straight forward and very quick way of claiming.

Hope everything goes well for you :)

Does anyone know how long on average RM take to payout the compensation, once you claim for a lost item?

After I have called RM usually a letter is sent to the recipient for them to sign to confirm they haven't recieved the item and then after about 1 week I recieve my cheque :)

    Hope this helps

this is just a till reciept and gives no details of the address you posted it to. So therfore is only proof of buying a service but not which service. It can be used as proof of posting if a PO clerk fills in the bit at the bottom with property name/number and postcode. The hand written certificate must still have the PO stamp on though, but if you fill these out before going to the PO it makes everyones job easier.

Ah, I see. But regardless of the address, I should receive a refund for the postage as the service was not fit for the purpose.

Also, they cannot decide to give a book of 12 stamps as compensation one day and not the next if they have consistent rules.

I also don't find I have to ask for a receipt every time I buy something from a shop, or receive a delivery. The Royal Mail probably save quite a bit of money losing items and not giving refunds when requested.

In theory I could actually take legal action and have the recipient of the parcel confirm all the details under oath... LOL

Royal Mail's run by a bunch of gangsters!

Same here, if I hear anything within 3 weeks I consider myself lucky. My last one went in about 8 days ago, I won't even bother chasing it for another week or so at least.

Nope, not according to RM's T&C's which you agree to when using their service.

If they admit fault by sending a book of stamps and you disagree that this does not cover the value, complain to postwatch, they do a great job chasing up these things!

Yes they do save loads by not coughing up, but that's why complaining to postwatch helps!
