Aycor - I have had jam jars from freecycle in the past, but no joy with the larger sizes or preserving jars.
Paulie'sGirl - unfortunately if this is going to look right for the hampers, it has to be in one single jar - no problem with it going off once opened though anyway, as it's intended to be used all in one go (a recipe mix). I am jamming too - have a load of small jars for that project.
Ted - I think you're probably right in the long run - I just thought a preserving jar might get re-used for pastas etc if nothing else - and it also looks a bit fancier. I recently bought some kilner jars from Dunelm Mill £1.29 but they were 0.5L -Can I ask why the extra 0.1L is so important?! I am about to make some chutney so would value your expertise!0

Thanks overlykeensaver - but it's not expertise - I'm a complete novice when it comes to these things.
But, as far as the jar size is concerned, it's purely a matter of fit. I'm making up some jars for hampers that have the dry ingredients of a recipe in, and it just so happens that they fill 0.6L - smaller and I can't get it all in, larger and there would be too much airspace, and the contents (which I am layering for effect) will get mixed up, and also possibly go stale.
I think I may be able to get around the problem though with 0.5L jars and a bit of fancy packaging around one ingredient (which comes packaged in the right quantity in it's own right).

I just spoke with Kitchens in Bristol (Whiteladies Road) and they sell the seals for "Ravenhead" jars for less than £3.00 for 10. They are always very helpful so if you don't have a Kitchens near you, they might post seals to you.

This is a very interesting thread. I've always wanted to try my hand at bottling - both to see a shelf full of my produce and to save the space in the freezer for other things.
I appreciate the instructions for bottling tomatoes but my plants did not like the weather this summer and went on strike. But I do have access to several bags of windfall apples and would like to bootle them. Please can someone kind (Ted?) post up instructions for a first-timer?

Your jars can also be purchased from http://www.jbconline.co.uk they only sell glass jars and bottles. Also very competitive if you buy more than 24.0

Yes correct, every supermarket here in France has them - and also in places like garden centres and DIY shops. They also have other interesting systems like jars with metal caps/seals (with a pop-up button thingy) and then a screw cap on top. You re-use the jar and the screw cap, and use a new seal each time. I have that very book! Written by Sue Cutts. She does say not to reuse the rubber sealing rings unless you are sure they are not damaged. I wonder how many times you can reuse them? As you say, they are not cheap.0 -

I have a pressure canner, which enables me to also bottle meats and things like that in bulk.
The jars I use are mason ball, from Waresofknutsford.
What is annoying, is that these same jars are pennies each in america!Proud to be dealing with my debts :T
