Parcel delivery firms: who are the best and worst?

Placed an order from m&m direct on Dec 31st. They first came to deliver on Friday 4th Jan, no advance notice, or else I would have made myself available at home. As a result, I got a 'sorry we missed you card'. They tried again on Monday (yesterday), I rang the number on the card in the morning and told them I'll be out between 10am and 2pm. They say they'll deliver outside of those times. I get back dead-on 2pm to find another card. Rang them again, asked if they could deliver to my work place, as I'm in work for most of the rest of the week (which is in the next postcode area), they say no. Had to settle for delivery tomorrow morning anytime up until 11.30am, hopefully they'll turn up in that time!!
In vast contrast, I had an order delivered by DHL; I got every notification possible to tell me where and when my parcel will be arriving.0 -
Dear Superdan - thank you for your polite and considered reply. It's appreciated. You make a reasoned point, i dont agree with it, but certainly don't think its off kilter.

Thought it was time to stop lurking and create an account so I can post my experience!
Yodel are just terrible. Last year I waited almost a month for my wireless router to come from Virgin Media for installation, so had a month with no internet access.
Firstly they attempted to deliver twice before I was even aware, because I was never given a tracking number (probably Virgin's fault to be fair), but what wasn't Virgins fault was that Yodel did not leave a card on those two occasions, so I didn't have a clue they were even attempting.
After eventually finding out from Virgin, I wasn't allowed for it to be sent to my work address for some reason, and they only deliver Monday-Friday 7am-7pm at any point in the day. As someone who lives alone and is away from home 7am-6pm weekdays, what chance does give me? Regardless, I begrudgingly accept their policy and take a day off work to receive the parcel. They never show up, and at 9pm the tracking page said I "refused the delivery". Words cannot describe my anger at that point.
Their phonelines are only open 9am-5pm too, so I often waited 30 mins before hanging the phone up after no answer. I couldn't take another day off work, so I get my friend to house sit and rearrange the delivery again. By 4pm it doesn't show up again, so I leave work early, me and my friend travel down to the Loughborough depot, and lo and behold, the parcel is in their depot, on a shelf, after 30 minutes of searching, not on a van like the tracking website would fool me! Worst experience ever.0 -
I've just phoned 7 times so how does that work then? I work for yodel and have just added how great we are to change the poll. I might be here all night but hey who cares! Not really a reflective poll then...0

Don't forget - it's the company you're buying goods from's responsibility to get goods to you in good time, not the courier's - so yes, complain to the courier when things go wrong - but please, also complain to the company you purchased the goods from as it's THEIR problem to fix, and is also the only way it'll get better in the long run (as they're the ones who can put pressure on firms to improve)0

Hardly a scientific poll though is it. Yodel have the largest market share of home deliveries in the UK so aside from Royal Fail are the most likely to have had interaction with the people voting.
When put into that perspective the result is totally biased against them!
Polls like this prove nothing.2020 Wins:

I always ask sellers to use Royal Mail if at all possible and I'll pay any extra. Sometimes they will, sometimes not.
I know they need to compete with each other but I just wish the big couriers would find a way of operating combined local collection centres. If Post Office Counters Ltd was smart it would have found a way to get in on this.
Quite often I'll end up driving 20 miles for something off Ebay worth a tenner.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0 -

So you think Yodel provide a great service, do you?
And that the thousands of people on here who've received awful service from them are what...lying? unlucky?0 -
I would have to say in my opinion Royal Mail are the worst I have experienced, never had a problem with yodel!0
