Benefits single mum living with parent

Is the State and by proxy us the tax payers the only responsible people in the equation ? The dad has done a runner and instead of pursuing him for child maintenance, OP is here wanting to know how we can support them.
Overall benefit entitlement is the same with or without child maintenance, so it makes no difference to taxpayers.0 -
Ok i'm no expert on benefits, but the first one that springs to mind would be child benefit (working or not),
If not working then income support (till child is age 5 i think then job seekers), plus any maintenace from father.
No idea regarding housing costs as she'll be living with you.
If she goes back to work (even part-time) she may be entitled to working tax credits if she does enough hours. Not sure how Child tax credits fit in.
She will also be 'keeping her hand in' skills wise, maintaining pension contributions (if there is one), and may find she likes the break from child care.
A Benefits checker is probably worth doing with different senarios.0 -
I agree on one hand, but I also think that it is actually by expending on the issues that posters are more likely to show sympathy. It is the posts that givs that flavour of 'I am entitled to benefits and I don't want to work so what can I get' that gets the unpleasant responses. When good reasons are provided to explain the rationale for seeking information on benefits entitlement that goes beyond 'just because I am entitled to it', the tone of the responses become usually more acceptable.
Again i agree but some newbies take a while to open up...if given a chance.
I really dont feel that the OP in this case has an entitlement issue as she is clearly a single parent herself that has just lost her job and asking for advice for her daughter who is also a worker.
Anyway OP sorry for hijacking your thread i wish you all the best and hope everything works out for you all.0 -
Poppy68 - thank you for the advice. Unfortunately it doesn't cover the situation of a single mum living with her parent.
I do wish I hadn't posted. I really thought posting on a respected site's forum would give me answers. Information I have given has been cherry picked or just ignored. I just wanted some advice. As someone who has never claimed any benefits other than child tax credit or child benefit I didn't know where to start.
I have supported my daughter through university and through her pregnancy and the 6 months since the birth of a beautiful grandaughter by providing her with a home rent free. I will continue to support her once I return to the flat. All I wanted to know was would she have any money at all to at least pay for food/toiletries for her and the baby.
If someone could tell me how to shut down this thread I would be very grateful.0 -

Thank you to icequeen99, Morlock, Bigmoney2 and Poppie 68 for your advice which came through whilst I was writing my previous posting.
I appreciate the useful information.0 -
The only other thought I have is this.
If Op's daughter is on extended maternity leave (post pay) then is she entitled to claim benefits as technically in employment. I *think* income support pays but not sure as technically she is still employed until she officially resigns.0 -

hi i think the best thing to do is to call the benefits helpline or go into your local jobcentre. I shouldnt think you will lose any ct as that is to help towards bringing up the children. Good luck and just ignore the bashers there is a small group that pop up in every thread they call them trolls. They are only here as they have nothing better to do but cause trouble just block them then they cant wind you up xxx0 -
My daughter has been living rent free in a flat owned (with the bank) by me. She currently gets maternity pay (until March) child benefit and child tax credits and a small amount of working tax credits. Obviously no housing/council tax benefits are claimed.
I am losing my job and home (a rented flat which goes with my job) and will have to move back to the flat currently occupied by my daughter.
If we all live together what benefits can she claim? Will her child tax credits be affected? Will my child tax credits be affected? (I have a 14 year old son). Is there anything else she can claim or does living with me affect her entitlement?
She will be off work without maternity pay from March to June and may not go back to work at the end of her maternity leave.
I will not be claiming any benefits other than CTC as I have savings although I may get 6 months of non means tested JSA. .
Thank you
Julie
When her maternity pay ends in March she could claim Income Support as a lone parent as stated until the child is 5 or they change the rules, her working tax will cease, she will also claim full child tax credits and child benefit.
Any maintenance she may get does not effect her I.S.
Your child tax credits and capital will not effect her claim.
If she decided to go back to work her I.S would cease.
She can get help and advice from CAB and Welfare rights...
Your daughter has been given some good advice in this thread hope everything works out for you both0
