If they loose 1 piece the set is possible no good as you can't build it!
Lego isn't usually suitable for 3 year old either its a choking hazard !Wins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.0 -
If they liked the iPhone, then i would have opted for an iPod touch. The layout would be familiar and you'd have access to lots of free apps
My 5yr old wanted an iPad, but I felt it wasn't portable enough for a child, so opted for the touch instead. She hasn't put it down since Christmas day. It's used for her Maths homework, watching videos, colouring in, puzzles and games. Best £50 I've ever spent on a gift0 -

Duplo?
you don't have to follow a set in Lego, that's the whoe point. You make your own stuff up. Or isn't that allowed these days?If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -

I only ever see the sets for sale but I'm sure you'll reply with another smart assed comment.Wins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.0 -
We have 2 kids, just under 2 years between them.
They have no technology of their own. We own DSs, which they have games for. We own phones and tablets, which they play on every now and then.
They play really well together and are the best of friends 90% of the time. After an hour on the DS, they both turn into these horrid people.
I'm not against technology at all for young kids, but this Christmas had me really sad. Seeing so many familys out together and the tablet/iphone/DS being the babysitter of choice rather than parents engaging and talking with their kids.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

I really struggled to buy my ds some Lego this Xmas! Everything on sale seemed to build a plane, or a car etc! Took me ages to find a bucket of Lego! (And when I got it it was full of small pieces which he puts in his mouth so it's been hidden away until he is older)!:(0 -
You should start using your son's tablet - he will want it then!
This!! I don't think there's anything wrong with buying children a tablet, by time they're late teens technology will have moved on so much who knows what they will want so the whole future gift debate may be moot anyway
BBC iplayer would be a good idea, and if you use something like Mx player you can play films in avi or mp4 format. But I player should let you download kids programs anyway... I was wary about putting my payment details in to my sons but it let me put a password on so I got some cheap educational games and so far so good.
Oh also audio books, or put a kindle app on it too, there are free children's books - probably ones with pictures...
And what about a cheap drawing app?
My younger children 3 and 4 have leap pads and honestly I'd much rather they had tablets, there are so many child friendly apps and they're so cheap compared to leap pad games . I should say I didn't want them to have either leap pads or tablets but not because they are not age appropriate but because the kids are so careless, but the person who bought them insisted... and surprise surprise the screens are scratched to bits, but I suppose it's good they play with them.Save £12K 2013 #54 - £4625/£15k£19,625 saved since 2011£50,000 by August 2014SPC #1925 £600 -

I must have missed the bit where the OP asked people what a 3 year old should be playing with. I really thought the thread was about how she could make the tablets more interesting...
