Hi salthegal, I have emailed Mistral about the vent kit, but no reply as yet, although it was only on Sunday evening I think.

I'll post on here as soon as I find out more - be good if we ever get chance to use the bl**dy thing with this weather eh?! I'll be using the heating mode before air-con at this rate!

I bought one of the unit mentioned in the first post but it didnt come with a vent kit. I have regular windows that open out does anyone know of a good vent kit at a reasonible price ?

I read the post bout putting perspects over the window but not sure I am up to making one of those. I need the window are to be secure as I have a cat that I dont want to get out of the window when the Air Con is on

Good research, I would like to know what the ball park running costs for on of these units is though, are we talking 20p a day or £2 a day? I know it will depend on the ambient temperature and the duty cycle.

    Cheers
    Simon

a 12,000 btu unit coolign a room can be as much as £3 a day, thats if the compressor is on all day without cycling off./

Some links to some really good and powerfull units on there maybe a little more for your money but some units also feature true heat pumps. Rather than using a heating element the unit works in reverse so its cold air coming out of the hose and heat coming out the vents. Much more efficient heating in winter.

Please take a look at it, i work in a/c.

I bought a portable a/c years ago from Innovations a few years ago - trailed the hose out of the windows and closed the curtains. I found that, while it did pump out cold air, it didn't actually reduce the temperature in the room - i.e when you walked into the room it stilll felt every bit as hot as the rest of the house, unless you stood in front of the unit. Our bedroom isn't that large either (about 4m by 2m). To that extent it was no better than a fan. For this reason I now leave the a/c in the corner and use a fan instead.

Has anyone who has bought one of these checked to see if it actually lowers the temperature in the room?

First things first is your unit powerfull enough to cool the room. Ive got a 12,000btu unit at home and this just managed to cool my lounge that has high ceilings and is a room that doesn’t even get the sun in.

Have you got doors and windows closed apart from where the unit is venting out of. If you cannot close internal doors, pin a curtain up over the door so it acts as a shield to keep the cool air in the room.

Failing all that and if ur unit isn’t big enough then you would be best getting a unit that is.

If you are going to use a small unit that wont cope with the room it is in, you are wasting energy as it will never achieve to lower temp.

I have a query folks, something that's long been puzzling me about Portable Air Con. Units.

If the unit needs the window open to vent warm air outside, what stops that warm air and the warmer temperatures outside in the Summer anyway getting back in through the open window?

My window is a large awning type (hinged at the top and opens outwards) and would not lend itself to blocking partially.

Obviously the unit is pumping hot air out of the house through the window so the air leaving has to be replaced so u will find the unit will suck in air froom the rest of the house. To stop hot outside air coming in with your type of window try covering the gap with the curtains etc and blocking it this way ensuring no gaps.

another way to try is wher u have hose out the window, buy a tumble dryer hose and sort of make a funnel type thing then fit this over the bottom half of the unit at the back (i used a black bin liner and taped it over the bottom) and then hang this hose outside too, the unit will use outside air to take away the hot air thefore not using your cold air in the room.
