I would just like to say that I am now totally confused.. I never realised that it would be so complicated.. When I phoned T-mobile all they said was that I would have to let them know whether I was going to go on a contract or a payg after my contract ended...
    Say them PAYG then.
As I use the phone so seldom, I am not going to bother with the pac code and complicate matters and have to pay a monthly cost... as all I will do is send an email/or text to my few friends and give them my new number... when I decide what to do...
I don't understand what 'monthly cost' you mean. If you stay on PAYG with T-mobile the number remains the same. If you go elsewhere it is easier just to take it with you.
As I am keeping the phone, how do I keep all the numbers on the phone? If I change the sim, do I lose the numbers?
If the numbers are stored in the phone, they remain there. If some numbers are stored in the sim and you change it, copy the numbers to the phone first.

Thanks for the reply, Grumbler... As you can see I am totally out of my depth where phones are concerned.

I gave notice for my contract to end on the 28th and that remains the same but they told me today that if I ask for the pac code today (as I read in the posts), my contract would go over the end of January and I would have to pay another month's fee. As I got a great deal with redemptions etc, it is not worth me paying £25+ for the pac code as i would then be paying the full monthly price for the phone... If that makes sense...

So I have just paid for an ovivo sim card as their allowances would be absolutely fine for me.. so I'm just going to check where my addresses are stored on the phone.. I'll just remove the sim card and see if my phone numbers are still on it...

Thanks for everyone's advice on this matter.. It has been quite an eye opener.. and complicated...

Did T-Mobile not offer you the chance to stay with them on contract? They normally offer to keep you on the same tariff for half the price if you do not want a new phone.

No, I didn't know that... I told them that I didn't know what I would do until my son comes home next week and sees what suits me best.. Do you think I should phone them up and ask them or is it now too late?

    Cheers

Hi, like you I took out one of the Motorola Defy offers 2 years ago, I like the phone and it still works like new. I rang them early December for my pac and told them I was going to take out a Tesco sim only deal which was 250 min, 5000 txt & 500mb data for £7.50. I didn't particularly want a Tesco sim as I do not get a very good O2 signal where I live but there was also an identical Orange deal at the time. My contract with T-Mob was £15 / mth x24 for 300 min, 300 txt and unlimited data but they said I could keep the same contract etc for £7.50 a month as I did not want a new phone so the only thing that's changed is the price has halved :D
However, the Tesco £7.50 deal now comes with a new HTC Wildfire S for free. Tesco sell that phone for about £90 on payg :o

    HTH.
