    All good ideas on here.

I would sound a note of caution on dummies though. Not everyone uses them and they can, for some babies, cause breastfeeding issues if introduced to early, so it might be best to miss those out.

Love the idea of sippy cups though, and how about some soft baby cutlery for when they introduce solids? Or a bowl and plate set?

    Hi all,

Im just after some expert advice. My sister in law and best friend are bith due in the next few months so i have been making a baby hamper for each of them. I want it to be for the first 12months as i know they will get loads of new birn stuff. So far to go in ive got:-

    Nappies
    Wipes
    Talc
    Dummies
    Comfort blankets
    Nappy bags
    Baby shampoo
    Sippie cups

Ive also got some booties because i couldnt resist and will put a teddy in. I also want something for the mums. I am just after your advice as to what im missing?

    Many thanks
I would scrap the baby shampoo (I had already bought it and it goes a hell of a long way and I didn't get round to using any of the baby toiletries in the hamper a friend did me.

Nappies...to be honest there are so many freebies that in newborn size I had more than enough.

Sippy cup - can recommend the basic tommee tippee one (about £1.50 in wilkos) is a popular one among mums.

Useful things that got used in my hamper were - baby toothbrush, cotton wool, weaning spoons, bath thermometer, nightlight (still use that nearly two years on!), bath toys, muslins, basic babygrows.

I agree that some medical supplies could be useful - I never bought them till I needed them, but would have been handy in hindsight to have had them before she got ill. The Olbas oil (or Karvol drops) are great. Karvol rub for when they are a bit older.

Oh and the best thing in my hamper was a baby book to record all the 'firsts' in :) It's lovely to look back on now.

For mum - the thermal mug idea is just genius and I'll be definitely using one of these next time, so that is a great addition to the hamper. And maybe some snacks that she can have next to her while feeding - nice biscuits or something :)

Some lip balm for Mum. I found the ward to be very drying and was in for 5=6 days with both of mine (c-section)

Saline nose spray or nose drops. I never even knew it existed, but check the age appropriateness.

Food pouches (Ella's kitchen?) for a slightly older baby were great as you can squeeze onto a spoon and feed very easily.

  • Ditch the talc! It's been linked to ovarian cancer and asthma.

I would include NAPISAN. My sister-in-law put it in my baby hamper and I had no idea what it was or what it was for but of course within a few days I couldn't be without it!!!

I received one of these and it was so lovely. all the usual baby bits but we also got matching mugs for 'mummy' and 'daddy', nice sweets and chocs good for energy and also a posh candle which smells of baby powder! I'd never light a candle now i have a toddler at home but i love this candle because it smells without lighting and reminds me of when he was first born.
    :)
  • I did this for my friend i included -

Hat, scratch mitts, nappies, wet wipes, muslins, nappy sacks, tissues, spare changing mat, bibs, socks, weaning spoons, cup, plate and bowl set, travel bibs, lunch box for carrying snacks, sudacreme, vaseline, talc, shampoo, baby oil, cradle cap shampoo, calpol, gripe water, rattle, teether, cuddly toy, blanket, travel rug (waterproof back), money box, board books, ball, and some bikki pegs (also for teething) I better add 4 friends clubbed together to do this we got some clothes and a coat and a nappy bag too :)
I need to start saving so I plan to save £2 a week to start with:beer:
  • Hi, I did something similar for hubby's best mate's wife recently! This is what it contained...

    Testers of Lansinoh
    Baby nail scissors/clippers
    Cotton wool
    Baby brush & comb
    Teething rings
    Anbesol (liquid)
    Paracetamol medicine
    Ibuprofen medicine
    Karvol capsules & rub
    Breast pads
    Gripe water
    Shampoo
    Bedtime bath bubbles
    Talc
    Pack of wipes
    Nappies
    Vaseline
    Sudocrem
(Can't remember anything else off the top of my head!)

Also added, rubber gloves for her husband! And some chocolate & bubble bath for mum.

Funnily enough, we day we gave her the hamper, she went into labour! 4 weeks early!

Brilliant thread. I am doing a hamper for my sis in law when she has my nephew and despite having had 2 kids myself there are genius ideas on here!!
“Listen earnestly to anything your children want to tell you, no matter what. If you don't listen eagerly to the little stuff when they are little, they won't tell you the big stuff when they are big, because to them all of it has always been big stuff.”
  • I've done baby hampers before.

Honestly- I would steer clear of bath products, wipes and nappies. Its up to a Mum to choose what brands they want to use- and if you get them something they don't want to use then it will either sit gathering dust or go in the bin.

I think your best bet is to get babygrows and vests, some bibs (funky giraffe do some lovely funky bandana bibs) and mittens/hats. Chances are they both will be inundated with things for newborn and 0-3 so get some bits for when baby is older.

Maybe do a little one for Mum too- some lovely bath bits, favourite chocolate and maybe a gift voucher?
