  • It's not advised to use talc on a newborn as it can trigger asthma. How about some bibs and muslin cloths I have found them really useful. Top to toe baby wash and the bedtime bath are things we have used a lot of too.

How about some baby olbas oil. I know it's a bit random but it wasn't something I thought to buy but really needed at 3am with a congested baby who couldn't sleep!!!!!!

    Nappy cream like sudocream
    Teething rings
    Some weaning pots for food
A few baby toys like a rattle

How about some home made vouchers the mums can trade in?
    - Cook a meal
    - Wash the dishes
    - Cuddle baby for an hour so she can get some sleep

Help and support is really the most valuable gift you get.

Plus if they are breastfeeding Lansinoh is great for sore nipples, and I found Tommee Tippee breastpads were the most effective.

    Good luck.

Sudocreme & bepanthan. (Can't spell sorry)

When I did one for my friend at work I used a baby bath to put it all in then brought baby potion, oil, sponges, shampoo, the two things above an a baby towel.

I have a picture of it on my phone but don't know how to put it on here

Talc can be handy for Mum if she ends up in surgical stockings after giving birth. It enables you to get them back on after taking a shower! one HCA gave me that tip when I had my 1stborn, and I ended up passing it back to a HCA as a tip when I had my second. A friend did a hamper for me too when I was having ds, she put it in a 'holdall' that you kept all baby;s toiletries in, rigid plastic with a handle, can't think of the correct name- it has been 13 years! Other items she included were sanitary towels and knickers for me and scratch mits for baby.

Pop in a travel mug - you know the insulated ones with the lids? Amazing - you can make a coffee, feed, wind and change baby, and it'll still be warm when you come back to it. They're great for during feeding too, no chance of baby knocking cup over, you can pop cold drinks in them too, and the one I was given was one of my best presents ever. Just make sure the lids are the screw on type, and not the press on ones.
Pop in a few posh tea bags, some nice coffee, or even a bottle of diet coke, and mums happy!

Maybe some notelets and stamps if they are the handwritten thank you letter type - people love to celebrate new babies.

muslins are great (can get them from the supermarket).
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.
  • With note to nappies do you know which brand they plan to use? We've been advised that every brand fits a baby different and some they just won't get on with.

I only say this as a family member bought enough pampers for 6 months but found they just didn't fit and had to go re buy them all from tesco as they were her favourite :)
