Baby shopping list

  • I found Sainsbury's baby stuff really soft and lovely and I'll be honest, LO hardly wore anything but babygros until he was at least a year old! He did wear outfits occasionally but he was also bought a load of really cute long sleeved body suits and stuff and they worked out just fine. It's funny, LO was 8lb 4oz when born but I had some stuff off friends who had had twins who were really small and he seemed to fit in the vests and gros for ages!? Mine wasn't a fast grower, he was breastfed and just seemed to put weight on slowly but surely. I bought some M&P jeans for him, 6-9 months and he could still get into them at 18 months, bit of a different story now, he's all leg but no tummy so his kecks look massive around the bum and waist, even with a nappy on :)

Being breastfed also meant (for us) he only had a poo once a week at most. I went through breast pads like you wouldn't believe but at about 5 months I didn't need them anymore, did try reusables but they didn't work for me. We saved a bundle on wipes at the time but now he has chronic loose stools so we go through loads, so always stock up when they're on offer (Huggies pure in this house but Pampers nappies).

Antilop high chair gets another massive thumbs up here, we also got the cot and mattress (mattress was expensive though) from Ikea. Never got the chance to change it to the bed though as he hated the bars and you could only take one side off so we got a toddler bed which he's been using since last summer (he's 2 1/2 now)

Skinty is right, I found muslins great, bought a load from Ikea, still in use now and I even sewed buttons and tags onto one and he loved it (super sewed on)

Breast pump, I bought a cheap manual one, but to be honest I couldn't be bothered with it, breastfeeding got so easy there didn't seem any point but I can understand it might be different if you have to go back to work.

We got a baby bath from Ikea for a fiver, he liked it for a bit but at around 5 months he started coming in the bath with me and he started loving bath time.

Mine was also in the Moses basket until nearly 6 months and he was very happy in there, as I said he wasn't a fast grower though. After that he was in bed with us then at just over a year he went into his own room and cot.

It's all a bit crazy and you will get a bit carried away with it all but you can save a fortune. The only thing I'd really shell out for if I had it all over again would be the car seat. We didn't spend a fortune on a buggy, a Maclaren that went completely flat and we do still use it now, not very often though, but I'd say we got our money's worth.

Good luck and best wishes with your little bundle, the time will fly like you won't believe :)

I must be the only person that didn't see the point of muslins. I bought a pack as suggested on everyone's lists but didn't use them. What are they for?
You're not the only one, I never had them either and wasn't sure what they were for, other than having over your shoulder if baby sicks milk up or why people were recommending having extra, till I read skintchicks answer and then I'm thinking, well I must have used something else though no idea what, but my youngest is almost 10 and I know that nowadays baby advice changes daily on the 6pm news.:D

I really liked my baby towels, mine came from Primark, unsure if they still do them. Would be making do with a large towel though if they're now around £10 to buy. We were passed on a lot of bedding for ds who had a cot, but m-i-l who saws just cut and hemmed old sheets to size for dd's cot-bed.

    Hi
I know when a baby is on the way you want to be prepared and so you go out and try and buy everything you think you''ll need. I'd advise buy what you absolutely need and then wait & see what you actually need when the baby arrives.
Personally I hated baby baths both of mine were c section so I couldn't' lift one full of water & I found supporting a baby & washing them at the same time difficult. I ended up filling the bath with an inch of water & putting a towel on the bottom. You can also get baby supports for the bath. The one I had was just a wire frame with mesh & I got it from Tesco s. It was great because the baby was supported but could also move themselves.

With my daughter muslim squares were no good. She was a very sicky baby so I used hand towels instead.

I used my muslins for everything because I hated carrying loads of stuff out with me. I never had one of those massive change bags, I'd take the bare minimum with me because I wore DD in a sling and wanted as little weight in my bag as possible as I had to carry it.

i found muslins so versatile they eliminated the need for lots of extra stuff.

BUt some people like to carry the extra stuff, and so would use something else instead.

Join the boots club and you can get a free changing bag with a free travel changing mat. I'd offer you mine but it's cheaper for you to get the free one!

Slings etc are great, but maybe borrow a friend's to try out first. My son screamed when he went in one, so I'm glad we didn't buy it.

I'm glad you've found everyone's suggestions useful. Good luck with it all.
