Travel Mattresses 15.00 Is this for a Travel Cot?

    14.

Breast pump 265.00 Woah! How much?? (Double breast electric pump) I would suggest hiring an NCT one first. They are fully sterilised and you sterilise before every use anyway. I thought I would get on with the electric but I didn't and the bog standard Avent hand pump was the one I got on with. Experiment with the ones in hospital they do electric and hand.

If you really want hooded towels, you could just cut a flannel in half diagonally and sew it to the corner of an ordinary towel. Hem the cut egde of the flannel first, or sew on bias tape to edge it.

I picked up some stuff in Sainsbury's sale yesterday- pack of 2 hooded towels was £7.99, cellular blanket for £5.33, and some packs of sleepsuits and bodysuits for £4 each.

We went to an NCT nearly new sale a couple of months ago and got a moses basket, baby bath and a big bundle of clothes for under £30.

OP, I know its exciting shopping for a new baby, but don't get caught up in buying loads of stuff you won't need/use as its easy to get suckered into products you can do without, which just end up cluttering up your home.

Here are the things I found useful:
babysleeping bag - both mine were wrigglers and it keeps them warm as they will enivitably end up without any covers on.
cot sheets - I got mine from Matalan and they washed really well. I had about 4 sheets to allow for the children being sick/leaky nappies.
    muslins -were a godsend
sterililising - I bought a cheap bucket with a lid and used sterilising fluid. However, it does bleach your clothes. This time, as i'm breastfeeding, I am using a small microwave steriliser, which is great.
Baby bouncer - so they can see the world.
changing mat - was £5 from ToysRUs.

THings that I didn't find so useful:
baby bath - I stick the children in with OH, he gives them a bath and its their fun time. I get them out and OH tops the bath up with hot water.
car shades - they really got in the way. In the end, I draped a muslin over the side of the car seat and that kept the sun out.
Moses basket - neither of mine settled into them, but were fine in the cot.
Steam steriliser - mine broke within a week of using it, but then I could have just been unlucky. I'm so much happier using the microwave steriliser or the sterilising tablets at a push.

Looking at your list, here is what I would buy:
    • Disposable Breast pads
    • Muslin
    • Bedding set
    • Body suits
    • Changing mat
    • New born nappies
    • cotbed
    • Pushchair
    • Car shades
    • Baby wipes
    • Maternity towels
And this lot I wouldn't bother with:
    • Bumpers 29.99
    • Hooded towel (Bath) + Mitt 9.50
    • Hooded towel (Bath) 12.00
    • Bibs ( M & P) 6.30
    • BTL Steriliser (M & P) 7.35
    • Breast cream ( inter dentals) 8.29
    • Fleece Blanket ( M & P) 24.00
    • Lamaze feel me fish 5.69
    • Baby soothers and thermo ( Amzon) 19.50
    • Lamaze activity Knot (Amazon) 7.19
    • nature mat (naturemat.com) 87.50
    • Humidifier 7.00
    • Cot mobiles 23.95
    • baby nappy cream 3.00
    • Baby grooming set (Amzon 24 pc set) - 12.95
    • Cotton wool - 2
    • Floor seating ( M & P ) 39.95
    • Travel Mattresses 15.00
    • First stage weaning pots ( M & P) 5.85
    • Feeding bootles ( M & P ) 12.50
    • Sleeping bag ( 2) 20.00
    • Breast pump 265.00
You might want a breast pump later, but you need to get breastfeeding established for the first six weeks, and you may find you prefer hand expressing (some mums do) so it's not a decision that's easy to make when pregnant.

You could get washable breast pads instead of disposable one, or just use cut-up flannels/towels.

I would also add to your list:
    • Lactulose (for easing constipation after the birth, you can get it free on prescription)

I must be the only person that didn't see the point of muslins. I bought a pack as suggested on everyone's lists but didn't use them. What are they for? I know in theory they're to catch sick but TBH this wasn't a problem with either of my babies.

I also didn't use many breast pads, as struggled to establish breast feeding. I'd buy 1 pack and see how you get on.

Sign up for the Boots and Tesco baby clubs then use their vouchers to save on all sorts of bits and pieces.

You're likely to be given some clothes, towels and quite probably a play mat, so personally I would buy the minimum (if you can manage to resist the gorgeous little outfits). You can still go shopping once you've had the baby and might well be glad of the outing.

I wouldn't buy many toiletries or wipes until you see how the work on your baby. I found Johnsons quite harsh but every one has different experiences. They're often on BOGOF at Tesco or Boots so again you can stock up once you've already used a few brands.
  • That's a list and a half! I see a LOT of your things are from m&p's, honestly unless they are in the sale there is no point. Even mothercare is better value, not to mention supermarkets, tk maxx, kiddicare is brilliant too!

It's 100% up to you what you spend but remember babies are only small for a short time, they grow at a ridiculous rate! If I were you I would spend less now but that's just me :)

I use a lot of supermarket vests, babygros and muslin cloths when I make up nappy cakes for presents - they are lovely quality and are not in them for long, I wouldn't buy expensive brands - babies can make a horrible mess of them from both ends!

    .
    • Wiping up posset
    • wiping hands/faces when moistened with water
    • wiping up any other kind of spills
    • light blanket in summer
    • over shoulder for people holding baby just in case of spits/sick
    • emergency nappy
    • emergency skirt/trousers in case of major poo incident (on baby, not you)
    • floor mat for putting baby down in a cafe/park
    • swaddling cloth for use either for sleep or for holding little arms out of the way when latching baby on to feed
    • emergency sunhat for baby (knotted at corners)
    • emergency bib (tie corners at back of neck)
    I'm sure there are more.
