What kind of breast pump are you looking at for £265?
I had the Medela swing which retails around £100, and is one of the best around.
Also if you're determined to breastfeed you won't need sterilising equipment for the first couple of months until your supply is established.

Also will your car seat be included in the cost of your pram?

    anderson8,

I was looking at medela double eletric breast pump as I will starting my work after baby is 5 months old. Yes, car seat included in Pram. Thats my approximation though. Cost can exceed my approximation though:-)

    My suggestion is eBay :)

Search for new items only if you want. Cots, bumper sets, pumps etc are all available, if you can find the ones you want/like

    • Bumpers 29.99 What's a bumper? Do you mean a cot bumper? If so, they're not recommended for newborns.
    • Disposable Breast pads 4.49
    • Muslin (6 packs) 6.00 Do you mean six muslins? You'll need more. Suggest about two dozen.
    • Bedding set ( M &P) 39.00
    • Hooded towel (Bath) + Mitt 9.50
    • Hooded towel (Bath) 12.00
    • Bibs ( M & P) 6.30
    • BTL Steriliser (M & P) 7.35
    • Body suits ( 7 Pack M & P) (2) 18.00
    • Breast cream ( inter dentals) 8.29
    • Changing mats by carla (2) 19.00
    • Fleece Blanket ( M & P) 24.00 Fleece is not great for newborns. You need cotton cellular blankets.
    • Lamaze feel me fish 5.69
    • Baby soothers and thermo ( Amzon) 19.50 What is this?
    • Lamaze activity Knot (Amazon) 7.19
    • New born nappies 11.12
    • nature mat (naturemat.com) 87.50 Is this a baby gym? They're a great idea although 87 quid's a lot of money for one.
    • cotbeds (approx) 120.00 Does this include the mattress? Most are sold separately and you'll need to buy both the cot/cotbed and a mattress.
    • Pushchairs (approx) 350.00
    • Car shades 4.70 You won't need these until the baby's in a forward facing seat.
    • Humidifier 7.00 I doubt this is necessary. Open a window.
    • Cot mobiles 23.95
    • baby nappy cream 3.00
    • Baby grooming set (Amzon 24 pc set) - 12.95 All you actually need is something to cut their nails and not straightaway either. For the first few weeks it's better to bite or tear their nails.
    • Baby wipes (Huggies 12 pck) - 12.00
    • Cotton wool - 2
    • Maternity towel - 5 * 2 (2 for 1.50 offer tesco) - 7.50

    • Total 858.02
      Later purchases
    • Floor seating ( M & P ) 39.95
    • Travel Mattresses 15.00
    • First stage weaning pots ( M & P) 5.85
    • Feeding bootles ( M & P ) 12.50
    • Sleeping bag ( 2) 20.00
    • Breast pump 265.00 Woah! How much??
    • Total 358.30

Specific comments above. You're a bit light on clothes - babe will need a hat too and probably a few more sleepsuits/vests. It won't need any toys at first so these aren't really essential purchases. Nor are bibs (use a muslin if need be) or towels (use your own).

My main comment though - no carseat?
"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.
  • By bumpers do you mean cot bumpers? Personally we weren't going to bother as I'd be concerned about them coming off.

We have gone for baby sleeping bags rather than cot bedding... seems a lot less faff and also safer as there's no risk of baby slipping under the sheets. You can get hold of these fairly cheaply, certainly cheaper than £39 for a set in different togs (don't know when your baby is due but as a rough guide you use a 1 tog sleeping bag in hot weather and a 2.5 tog in cooler weather).

You can cut down the price on some things if you're willing to go secondhand.

Have you already got / thought of:

Baby bath - we have bought an inflatable one from Amazon for about £9.
Changing bag - this is something I asked for as a Christmas present so I could get a 'posh' one. I think Boots give them away free if you join their Parenting Club and buy some nappies.
(for later) Highchair - we've bought the Ikea Antilop which at £16 is one of the cheapest and has had some excellent reviews.
I think you will need some more clothes also unless you are expecting people to give you some (we've had loads as presents, but people tend to buy cute little vests and socks so we've bought things like cardigans, sleepsuits, long-sleeved vests, scratch mitts, hats).
Travel cot (can double up as playpen)
    Baby monitor
    Nappy disposal system

(sorry if I've accidentally duplicated anything on your list)

    Hope that helps!

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Hi there!
I'm due in 5 weeks so am currently going through my lists making sure we have everything and know how you feel!

Re: hooded towels I got one free in my Mum to be Bounty pack and one free at my NCT class so no need to buy another.
In fact, the bounty packs are great for little freebies and coupons. Also join as many parenting clubs as you can! You can get all kinds of things sent to you!

How do you feel about second hand things such as bedding, clothes etc? If you are open to them then there is lots of bargains to be had on ebay and at jumble sales. We have bought most of our little one's clothes on ebay without spending much at all (have spent about £30 in total for all newborn clothes and most 0-3m clothes). Everything we have got is in great condition and have put them through the washing machine and they are lovely.

If you are not keen on second hand then now is the perfect time to look in the sales for the things you want. We are getting our pram in the sale, normally £299 but reduced to £187 so a good saving.

I think it really depends on how much you want/need to spend on things. If you have decided that you definitely want to get the brands that you have outlined in your post then I suppose the only way to reduce cost is to look out for deals, coupons, sales etc and to look on ebay for new but cheaper price. If you are not fussed on brands then you will have more flexibility on the price.

One thing I noticed on my list but not on your (I don't think, unless I'm being totally blind :rotfl:) is a moses basket or a bath? Is baby going straight into the cot? We are using a new, square washing up bowl for her bath for the first few months as we have v limited space at home.

    HTH :)

Trying to live a good life on little money :T

A lot of that stuff seems pretty expensive TBH. Are 'bumpers' cot bumpers? They recommend you don't have them as baby could suffocate on them. And the bedding set too is quite unnecessary. I know it's nice to have pretty things, but if you want to minimize your expenditure there's lots you could do without. You could get a much cheaper fleece blanket than £24.

The hooded towels are also expensive, I got a few as presents when my DS was born so they are maybe something you could leave and see if you get for presents? Baby can be dried with a hand towel in the meantime.

What's a Nature Mat & a floor seat? They seem to take up a lot of the budget!

You could also save money on the baby grooming set - the only thing I use from mine is the nail scissors.

I also wouldn't bother buying weaning pots, just buy some cheap plastic containers from Tesco or wherever.

My DS is 2, and I know when I was pregnant with him I wanted all these fabulous things that I just knew I was going to use, but TBH after he was born they were the biggest wastes of money!! I'm not pregnant with #2 and am buying nothing until I realise I need it.

I've been thinking about what essentials I need for this one and my list would be something like:

Moses Basket (for when baby is tiny, lots of them prefer it to being plonked in a big cot, plus it's good to have somewhere for them to sleep downstairs during the day)

Cot (we put the Moses basket in the cot at nighttime until he grew out of it)

Pram / sling (I had an expensive travel system with DS which barely got used, this time I'm using my cheap MacLaren)

Bottles & Steriliser (I'm planning on BF'ing but it didn't work out with DS so I'm glad I had them bought already)

Cot sheets and a few blankets.

Clothes wise - sleepsuits / babygros, vests, and depending on what time of the year your baby is due you'll need hats and a snow suit for outdoors.

Muslins and bibs could be bought cheaper elsewhere.

You'll also need a change bag to carry all the stuff about in!! I just got the free boots one (which comes with a changing mat) and it's done me fine.

Along with nappies, wipes, toiletries etc, that lot will do you for the first while anyway!! Another wee tip is not to buy too many nappies and wipes in advance - my DS leaked with every Huggies nappy and I can't even use Johnson & Johnson wipes on him as they bring him out in a rash - wait to see what best suits your baby.

    Forgot some bits:

Agree with the poster recommending the Ikea high chair - it's great.

We had a baby bath but didn't really use it as it was a pain filling & emptying it - you could get in the bath with baby or I had a bath seat thing - it lay down and was made of soft material so was fine to use from newborn, and eased my anxiety or dropping DS in the bath.

Forgot about baby monitor - great for peace of mind. We just have a basic one, not one that the baby lies on.

    xx

You can cut down the price on some things if you're willing to go secondhand. I stay in Aberdeen. Not much option of buying second hand. Also with respect to baby cot and other things we would like check properly before we buy. Therefore using ebay for used is ruled out.

Changing bag - this is something I asked for as a Christmas present so I could get a 'posh' one. I think Boots give them away free if you join their Parenting Club and buy some nappies.

I have joined NCT club today :-)

(for later) Highchair - we've bought the Ikea Antilop which at £16 is one of the cheapest and has had some excellent reviews.

    Noted.

I think you will need some more clothes also unless you are expecting people to give you some (we've had loads as presents, but people tend to buy cute little vests and socks so we've bought things like cardigans, sleepsuits, long-sleeved vests, scratch mitts, hats).

We will have to purchase everything for baby. So I will note down the items you mentioned above and update the list.

Travel cot (can double up as playpen)
    Baby monitor

    Nappy disposal system - Noted
