Mamas and Papas are one of the most expensive high street shops, for sleepsuits/blankets/bedding sets etc I'd recommend looking cheaper, Tesco/Asda/Sainsbugs all do a clothing range, and for first clothes are ideal as they're in them so little time.

Bodysuits, I'm not sure if you mean vests or babygrows, but you will need both more than likely, a short sleeved vest will be fine for may and then a long sleeved/legged baby grow over the top. We used both all summer with our wee one and he was a January baby.

I wouldn't buy the breast pump just yet either, not at that price. I'd wait and see how you get on with breast feeding, and then decide, it's an expensive piece of kit if you decide to stop breast feeding or if it doesn't work out. Medela Swing is excellent, I loved mine.

    Hi ya,

After consider above suggestion, revised figure for essential excluding additional baby clothing is £805.32 + £339.95.

I have not found the option for cot beds + mattresses. So need to check for proper deals.

    Gillyx,

Thanks for suggestion. I will not buy breast pump immediately. If at all there is a necessity I will first try one in hospital and see how I get on. I will buy only if it is absolutely essential. If my circumstances opt for formula then there is no need at all.

Sounds like a good idea :) a lot of women are successful breast feeders but when it comes to pumping they can't get much out, so it'd be a shame to see that amount of money to go to waste. I know the NCT hire them I think? and some HV will give you the option too, so at least you could give it a go :)

  • what's in the bedding set? seems expensive. have you got enough fitted sheets and flat sheets?

cot mobile - we picked one up at a car boot for £2.50!
  • you also need to add on the cost of the isofix base if that's how it will be attached in the car

I have a 1 month old and a two year old and here are my suggestions, if you really wanting to cut back:
    • Bumpers 29.99 Not recommended or needed
    • Disposable Breast pads 4.49 I'm on my fourth box as BF, but Tesco own brand are £1.50 and fine.
    • Muslin (6 packs) 6.00
    • Bedding set ( M &P) 39.00 I just use Tesco fitted cot/moses basket sheets and a supermarket sleepbag £20. Expensive bedding sets are not needed.
    • Hooded towel (Bath) + Mitt I have 2 and have never used. I just use a regular towel.
    • Hooded towel (Bath) 12.00
    • Bibs ( M & P) 6.30 My first wasn't a sicky baby and I didn't use bibs until she was spoonfed, then the plastic pelican type are good and one will do £1-2.
    • BTL Steriliser (M & P) 7.35 I'm currently not using one as BF.
    • Body suits ( 7 Pack M & P) (2) 18.00 Need sleepsuits also? Supermarket own brands are really cheap.
    • Breast cream ( inter dentals) 8.29 I got some Lanisoh free in the hospital from the midwife. A little goes a very long way.
    • Changing mats by carla (2) 19.00 £5 in supermarkets.
    • Fleece Blanket ( M & P) 24.00 This is very expensive for fleece. Again £5-£10 in a supermarket
    • Lamaze feel me fish 5.69
    • Baby soothers and thermo ( Amzon) 19.50
    • Lamaze activity Knot (Amazon) 7.19
    • New born nappies 11.12 I used over 300 size 1 in the first month
    • nature mat (naturemat.com) 87.50
    • cotbeds (approx) 120.00
    • Pushchairs (approx) 350.00
    • Car shades 4.70
    • Humidifier 7.00
    • Cot mobiles 23.95
    • baby nappy cream 3.00
    • Baby grooming set (Amzon 24 pc set) - 12.95 Nail clippers and baby hairbrush are all I have used about £2 each
    • Baby wipes (Huggies 12 pck) - 12.00
    • Cotton wool - 2
    • Maternity towel - 5 * 2 (2 for 1.50 offer tesco) - 7.50 Last time I used loads, this time 1 pack, you could get 2 and wait and see if you need more.

    • Total 858.02
      Later purchases
    • Floor seating ( M & P ) 39.95
    • Travel Mattresses 15.00
    • First stage weaning pots ( M & P) 5.85
    • Feeding bootles ( M & P ) 12.50
    • Sleeping bag ( 2) 20.00
    • Breast pump 265.00 I found expressing, then feeding, then washing up and sterilising too much work and I gave up expressing, so just BF.
    • Total 358.30
If you are happy to have used items, cots/cotbeds for collection only, go for a great price on Ebay. We got a really expensive one for my Mum's house for £30 and it was perfect.

Get yourself along to the Aberdeen one in February.
I have saved a fortune buying nearly new stuff from these sales.
Nct will also have nearly new sales in Aberdeen.

what's in the bedding set? seems expensive. have you got enough fitted sheets and flat sheets?

    - White flat Sheet

I need to shop around in ebay/amazon and find a good deal.

Bumpers 29.99 What's a bumper? Do you mean a cot bumper? If so, they're not recommended for newborns. - Yes cot bumpers

Please don't buy one. The cot death studies stated they can be dangerous, baby can get trapped in them. Save your money and baby

Disposable Breast pads 4.49 I think you might need to budget for more. See how you get on with one box. Also some can feel very rough, I went with Lansinoh ones

I also bought Lansinoh cream, life saver in those early weeks of feeding

Muslin (6 packs) 6.00 Do you mean six muslins? You'll need more. Suggest about two dozen. - ok noted they are fantastic

Bedding set ( M &P) 39.00 Save your money, just get some noise free fitted waterproof sheets for the mattress and layer them up I think John Lewis or Mothercare sold mine. A grobag/sleeping bag was a godsend. I had two.

Hooded towel (Bath) + Mitt 9.50
    Hooded towel (Bath) 12.00

Just buy a plain large towel

Bibs ( M & P) 6.30 As someone else said just use muslins, baby often dislikes them being put on and taken off

BTL Steriliser (M & P) 7.35 This sounds quite cheap. Not sure what steriliser it is, but my preference was for an Avent microwave one

Body suits ( 7 Pack M & P) (2) 18.00 You will need at least two packs if you want to stay sane in the washing department. Get them buy one get one free in Mothercare

Breast cream ( inter dentals) 8.29 Lansinoh was the best I found as I stated above

Changing mats by carla (2) 19.00 Very expensive, easier to find cheaper

Fleece Blanket ( M & P) 24.00 Fleece is not great for newborns. You need cotton cellular blankets. - Ok. Noted. Will amend the list.

Lamaze feel me fish 5.69 What is this?

Baby soothers and thermo ( Amzon) 19.50 What is this? - phillips avent baby ear theromometer and soothers Not sure you need the soothers. I know they are all the rage but a nightmare to wean them off

Lamaze activity Knot (Amazon) 7.19 Do you need this. Dad often likes to treat new baby to a ted when he passes the shop in the hospital. Lots of presents will come and likely to have a toy in one of those

New born nappies 11.12 You will need masses, but don't over buy on size one and two as they grow quickly out of these. Also don't be fooled by the cheaper brands. I found Pampers New Born and then Active Fit were best for the brands and Tesco Superfit for the supermarket shops

nature mat (naturemat.com) 87.50 Is this a baby gym? They're a great idea although 87 quid's a lot of money for one. - Baby mattress. I researched and found the coconut coir mattress are great. Sounds on a par with other mattress costs

cotbeds (approx) 120.00 Does this include the mattress? Most are sold separately and you'll need to buy both the cot/cotbed and a mattress. - No it doesnt include mattress. Sounds a reasonable cost, make sure mattress exactly fits the size, you don't want gaps for baby to get trapped in

    Pushchairs (approx) 350.00

Car shades 4.70 You won't need these until the baby's in a forward facing seat. what do you mean ? When baby faces in a back facing car seat the sun does not tend to creap round to baby's face, the little visor that comes on a car seat should cover that. When it comes to a forward facing car seat (stage 2 and above) for window car shades I would recommend Window Sox

Humidifier 7.00 I doubt this is necessary. Open a window. OK. Noted Wet a towel and place over a radiator in the room

Cot mobiles 23.95 Not sure they are necessary. If so I would print out some black and white pictures from the internet and dangle them from the ceiling

    baby nappy cream 3.00

Baby grooming set (Amzon 24 pc set) - 12.95 All you actually need is something to cut their nails and not straightaway either. For the first few weeks it's better to bite or tear their nails. ok
Baby wipes (Huggies 12 pck) - 12.00 I would recommend Pampers Sensitive, but for the first month at least only use water and cotton wool kinder on the skin. When you see how effective babywipes are on every surface you have in the house, you will see why it is best to hold off on New born skin

    Cotton wool - 2
Maternity towel - 5 * 2 (2 for 1.50 offer tesco) - 7.50 Just buy your normal Sanitary Towel brand, just get lots of them, and probably the Night Variety so it holds more

    Later purchasesFloor seating ( M & P ) 39.95 What is this a bouncy chair?

Travel Mattresses 15.00 Is this for a Travel Cot?
First stage weaning pots ( M & P) 5.85 Just use normal plastic pots from the supermarket. Also buy some plastic weaning spoons, the thinner tip the better, the wide round ones are difficult to get in their little mouths
    Feeding bootles ( M & P ) 12.50
    Sleeping bag ( 2) 20.00
Breast pump 265.00 Woah! How much?? (Double breast electric pump) I would suggest hiring an NCT one first. They are fully sterilised and you sterilise before every use anyway. I thought I would get on with the electric but I didn't and the bog standard Avent hand pump was the one I got on with. Experiment with the ones in hospital they do electric and hand.

In terms of clothes don't go buying lots of outfits, you are likely to get one or two as presents, just get at least two packs of body suits and baby gros, they tend to live in these for the first few months, all other outfits are very fiddly to get on and stay on.

Get a pair of socks and use them as mittens as they are easier to get on. It stops them from scratching themselves.

M&P really are expensive. Look online, look in supermarkets, and Mothercare, also think about going to an NCT nearly new sale and Ebay, things tend to be near brand new and much cheaper.

    Happy shopping.

PS - don't go for a nappy dispenser or disposal unit. Just keep nappies in the bag and use as you go. The disposal units just stink the house out. Pop a nappy in a nappy sack, or supermarket carrier and put straight in the outside bin
