If you have a criminal record, can you still claim JSA?

What do you suggest then? If he has to sponge off his mum he needs some money. Should people who "took the wrong path" be punished for the rest of their lives? Shame we don't have workhouses any more eh, you could have sent him there. How do you believe he should be penalised? Left to live on the streets?

I dont think anyone decides to take the wrong path, we have no idea what the crime is and what made him commit it? It just appears to me that if people with criminal records are left with no saftey net they surely will commit more crime to live?

Let's just say it was to do with children. Yes he should be on the streets and pelleted like the old days!

It would go some way to showing right from wrong -you don't know the crime but I can think of some that deserve the workhouse my sympathies are with the innocent parents tbh.

There are also schemes through probation services. Its a mentoring service where ex cons help and advice in matters such as housing and finding work, not sure if its national though, worth a try

Yeah, scary isn't it. I feel that he hasn't learnt any lessons and isn't likely too. This is where our justice system goes wrong and we still have to pay for them!

hmm, i have a conviction for affray - i pushed a copper who was beating my brother in the middle of a fight...

some convictions dont show the true effect of what happened...

what punishment was levied on him in court?... for what conviction etc...

a man pays for his crime by the punishment imposed by court (supposedly) but this isnt true is it?

if somebody lost their job due to points on their license... this is their own fault too? so do you feel somebody who gets a speeding ticket whilst at work should be sanctioned and live off nothing etc ...?

you cant judge anybody... who are you to judge them...? (brother/uncle/father/whatever....? - if he has a conviction, he would of been in court and "punished" "accordingly" (although we all know this isnt the case, what is this to do with you? - i doubt you are asking for advice for him, since you believe he shouldnt get help... so?...)

(but also, from personal experience, I failed to declare a conviction for affray on an application form, and recieved a two week sanction when i had to reclaim jsa when it was found out and lost my job... although it got me off benefits for a year all the same... i was back in work a couple of weeks later...)

legally if your not asked about a conviction, you do not have to declare it... and if your sacked for failing to declare it, you can take action... if you are asked and fail to declare, then its your own fault etc...

sanctions depend on the circumstances, and the type of conviction (if driving offences i dont think its comes into it... etc.. i know people who have been done for drink driving etc with no sanctions etc)

also, bear in mind,,, its also down to a pen-pushing decision maker.... but either way its unlikely to be a major sanction...

May I just say that after reading this thread you have shown yourself to be a nice person to even consider giving this member of your family the time of day by being concerned with his welfare etc given his conviction for the type of crime he has committed.

This must be a truly awful situation for you knowing what he has done. But you are showing dignity which is to be commended.

Sadly, crimes regarding children are now becoming more and more prevalent in our society as the justice system has failed us. They need to drastically change they way they do things if we are to live in the kind of society we want to live in.

I am a parent of two teenage daughters and I can't imagine what the parents must be going through.
