  • Has anyone noticed how much the Tesco Gold coffee has gone up. I was buying this at £2.34 ish for 200 grams but last week it was priced at £3.20, but their large tin of Tesco Gold is priced the same as before at £5.99, so I might buy a couple of those and stock up.

In the spirit of fairness, I have to say that Sainsbury's isn't a lot better.

In the past week or two their 'value' brand of kidney beans has increased from 18p per can to 21p. This is just one increases that particularly struck me yesterday but my general impression was that their increases are following Tesco's closely.

As comments here show, what they are all doing is hiking their own brand 'value' ranges while proclaiming they are cheaper on major brands. It's pretty cynical and they need to know that consumers aren't stupid - we notice these things.

Yes, but that's not what this thread is about. Those of us that keep track of this sort of thing, have noticed (in respect of a number of a different products), that Tesco have recently hiked their prices compared to what other supermarkets are charging. I could give you a list of products where for the past two years or so, Tesco charged more or less the same price as ASDA. Until about early December 2011 that is, when Tesco starting charging between 10% and 30% more. That's what's happened, and hence this thread.

Completely irrelevant what other supermarkets are charging.

Some supermarkets have contracts in place with farmers from years ago that locked in a cheaper price than market rate today. I know some supermarkets who just pay market rate for their supplies from farmers.

I personally store my crops away until there is huge demand and I can charge (well, sky is the limit). Supermarkets just pass it onto the consumer.

If Princes is continuing to catch fish by purse seine, then the Dolphin Friendly logo is a complete whitewash.

Personally I still don't eat tuna and now that the FDA has approved GM salmon in the US I won't be eating wild salmon for much longer either :(

I watched The Indian Ocean with Simon Reeve. One of the episodes featured Mauritius and how the oceans were being depleted of fish. They weren't allowed to film inside the dock as the fishing companies objected to it, but you could see a huge trawler and lorries with the Princes logo on. I've never bought it since!

Plus they under-fill the cans. I was getting 90g of tuna when it's supposed to be about 130. The other brand I've since bought, which I can't remember the name of lol, weigh the correct amount.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

Waitrose makes a profit on 2.4% of UK grocery sales. That's nothing, compared to Tesco, which according to Kantar Worldpanel had a 30% share of the UK market in November 2012.

If the competition was breathing down Tesco's neck, then Tesco would be more competitive.

If you aren't happy with Tesco, go elsewhere. There's nothing in Tesco which can't be bought in other stores. I saved over £3 and change last week on Tesco prices with Ocado and another £3 something in Sainsbury's.

I had to chuckle when in Tesco earlier. A tin of biscuits that were £7 before Christmas were reduced to £4, only they had £12 crossed out as the original price, which i'm sure they tried to charge at some point, but were on sale for £7 for weeks.

Tesco is on my doorstep, but Iceland and Morrisons are just 15 mins away and I may be forced to go there from now on.

That's the beauty of Aldi and Lidl. They don't pull stunts like this, and the prices stay genuinely low, without the Tesco 'cheat the customer' pricing.

Exactly the same with the wines, too. None of Tesco's 'double the price, then sell it at 50% off' pricing.

Couldn't agree more. Plus, Aldi and Lidl don't try to manipulate you with those loathsome 3 for 2 offers which make you feel like you're missing out if you don't buy 3, when you only wanted 1 in the first place.
