Tesco Antibacterial Handwash has just gone up from 69p to 99p - a rise of nearly 50%. An absolutely ridiculous price hike.

Absolutely ridiculous if anyone buys it at 69p. Ordinary soap is all you need.

I noticed the price increase on the passata too. Tesco value mixed herbs have nearly tripled in recent months and the price of value mince has gone up too. SO much for a cheap spag bol :(

Same here...as someone who constantly buys this for spag bog, home-made pizza, I have watched this jump in price

  • This is super sad (especially given time of posting...!) but I keep all our Tesco's delivery receipts and I have charted some of the price fluctuations - they are mad. E.g.

    Florette Salad
    8 May: £1.74
    1 Aug: £1.24
    20 Aug: £1.74
    28 Aug: £1.24
    12 Sept: £1.74
    15 Oct: £1
    18 Nov: £1.74
    5 Dec: £1
    30 Dec: £1.74

    Baby New Potatoes 1kg:
    3 April: £1
    8 May: £1.35
    1 Aug: £1.35
    28 Aug: £1
    18 Sept: £1.35
    1 Oct: £1.50
    8 Oct: £1.35
    15 Oct: £1
    5 Nov: £1.35
    10 Dec: £1
    30 Dec: £1.50

Similar fluctuations for whole cucumber (between 50p and 90p monthly).

What possible excuse could they have for this?

To be fair other items remained static e.g. eggs and toilet roll, although 4pints of milk was £1.18 in April and went up to £1.29 in December.

For us, we don't have a car and so it's easier to order weekly and have it delivered so Lidl etc (which I like and my mum uses) just aren't an option. Asda would be a bit cheaper but OH prefers Tesco so we just try and stick to our budget each month.

IMHO, the best hope it has is to play to its strengths and actually do some real price cutting - become a consumer champion, not fiddle around with the sort of pricing sleight off hand that has led to its present malaise. The problem is trust. Tesco has lost it.
Isn't this what in a capalist world businesses are supposed to be doing?
Competing to offer the best value? Of course due to their deceit and underhand tactics no one believes their word anymore.
I only buy items which I believe are worth the price I am paying for them.
For the first time in a long time Tesco do have a boney-fide offer.
I went in today to buy an 8 pack of coco cola for for £1.87 - Thats around 23pence each.

Gave up shopping at Tesco a while back when a nice new Aldi opened right next door.

Nicer shop, nicer staff - and the prices are, on average, around 30% lower for much the same items, same (or better) quality, made by the same food processing plants.

Anything Aldi don't sell (not that much, really, these days) comes from Waitrose.

Who needs Tesco any more? It isn't cheap, it isn't nice, and there are far better options.

    From CAG newsletter today..

In the past year, there has been some strong criticism of some pricing policies, most recently reflected in the OFT report that gives new guidance to supermarkets. For example, in March, The Grocer magazine found that in a major Tesco price-drop campaign, more items went up in price over 6 weeks (3,258) than went down (1,962). Tesco allegedly created the illusion of a big price drop by moving prices up just before the campaign. For example, Tesco placed ads in newspapers showing its own label cream of tomato soup “Was 59p, Now 45p”, however, six weeks before this ad was placed, it was just 46p. More recently, Which? looked into misleading multibuy deals, finding a long list of bad deals, including a Goodfella’s Deep Pan Pepperoni pizza initially on sale at Asda for £1 that went up to £2.50 for one or £4.50 for two in the multibuy ‘deal’. The reason why these deals keep on popping up is because there is no comprehensive way in which to monitor these bad deals.

Aldi might tell you the food is from the same place but it would be foolish to believe it - Aldi food is mainly from Germany anyway as far as I remember (was when I last shopped there about 10 years ago)

I have heard good things about Aldi food of late, but to apply the old wives tale about "same stuff in different box" is only suppose to convince naughty children to eat their lousy German cornflakes and never intended for full grown adults to believe

Tesco prices are totally shocking now and I am considering paying Aldi a visit

Tesco's like all the other supermarkets are in business to make money for their shareholders They really couldn't give a flying fig as to whether you can personally afford to shop there or not. They have almost cornered the market in my area.

The nearest Morrisons is 3 miles from me and the nearest Asda's 6 miles .The Co-op is about three miles away and has a very dark and gloomy underground car park with some decidedly odd folk who lurk there most of the day.

I have little choice at times, but I do as little buying there as possible
I have found that M&S isn't a great deal dearer than MrTs and a darned sight happier staff. On a Tuesday morning M&S have price reductions on not only food but veg and fruit as well which lasts a darned sight linger than Tescos stuff does .
Its a case of "you pays your money and you takes your pick".
I live alone an am retired so I can pick and choose what and where I shop I always check online to see whats on offer first and now have got to the stage of only buying whats immediately needed.Tesco get very little of my money unless its got something really worth buying.
It's like when you watch t.v. if you don't like the programme then vote with the switch, and either turn it over or switch it off .
In the case of shopping the power of shoppers is huge so if you don't like the store go somewhere else if possible .I use Aldis which is about 2 miles away when they have good offers on their friut and veg as I like to make my own soups and puddings and cakes
So if Tesco's are getting you steamed up then use your feet and go someplace else if possible.
Every little helps and your know it makes sence :):):)

Everyday value chopped toms have gone up from 31p to 35p.

Are more people doing fragmented shopping instead of one shop supermarket loyalty.

Aldi don't tell you that - you can tell from the codes on the packs, the place of manufacture and the ingredients. The Stilton, to take just one example, comes from the same creamery that supplies M&S, and the (British made) High Juice blackcurrant cordial is infinitely superior to Ribena but at a fraction of the price - check the labels for the blackcurrant juice content.

Most Aldi food these days comes from British suppliers - the same ones that supply all the supermarkets. The big exception is cooked, sliced meats, which are often from France or Germany, and are usually far better than the British equivalents. I'd mention, for example, the excellent Torchon Ham.
