would have been good advice but post five suggests the OP has already informed his insurer in which case much of the advantage of your suggestion is already lost........sillybilly2011 wrote: ».........I am seriously tempted to go through insurance and pay over the odds that way out of spite because the insurance said they will take his car to the cheapest quote they get nearby...........0

body panel repairs are repairs. firstly painting is a craft, secondly it takes a lot of time to do so no matter where you go you will have to pay for storage in the garage (indoors) which costs money.
Ask him to send you three quotes. If he wants the car repaired in factory option he'll push for the most expensive place. Trust me I had a panel replaced and the colour wasn't perfectly matched and it's a sore in my eyes now. Wish I had taken the helm of the repair and gone to a place that I trusted instead of going to the first bodyshop that was recommended by my insurer.0 -

Although it might be worth mentioning to the OP's insurers that he doesn't want to end up paying for repair of any of the other damage the claimant said he regularly suffers from parking there - which, of course, he's notified to his insurers.0 -
I know I will get pelters for this but from the sounds of this, a 2cm scratch on a 2001 car which the OP thinks he caused, the neighbour is ripping it IMO. If as OP says the car already has loads of scratches anyway and his car has no indication of impact there is a greater than 50% chance the scratch was already there.
Unfortunately the OP went to confess to the neighbour and is now stuck with paying inflated price for paint job or messing up his insurance premiums for years.
There is strong liklihood the neighbours car is worth the same as what he want for the paint job and the scratch on a 2001 car is not going to make any difference to cars value.
Personally I would go back to him and offer the original offer again and if he says no walk away and let him take it further and prove the scratch was not there - hard pushed if no transfer to OP car. Scratch can probably be erased with a decent t-cut.0 -

Sounds good except the OP has told his insurer0 -
hi, i have agreed to pay the extra money for the car to go to the garage of his choice, just to stop all this hassle and stress.
I am just wondering though, I have heard from other people in the area, that the person he is going to isn't that good. If he makes a mess of the paint job, could he force me to pay for another respray or go through my insurance?
This really wouldn't surprise me if he did this - the way his attitude has changed.

I think honesty is usually the best policy except when people act like nobheads in which case game on.
Don't let him bully you. Just tell him its your way or the highway: you will deny you caused the scratch and his insurance premiums will rise.
But as you've already don't your insurer it's perhaps too late for this.0 -

But you've already told your insurer so what's to point in not going through them? Won't your premiums rise either way?0 -
I only spoke to my insurance telling them my scenario but never gave any personal details so it hasn't went through my insurance. I only phoned for advice.2018 wins: Scottish weekend break, london weekend break and hotel chocolat hamper0
