Scuff, I thought of you today when I spotted a lovely fleece in Primark with a cute owl pattern on it for only £3. I was tempted by it myself for cuddling up on the sofa! It would be a great source of fleece fabric to make all sorts of things for the 11yo that likes owls. A 'gilet' (aka bodywarmer) springs to mind, perhaps with a matching hat / scarf etc. They had other fleeces of the same sort of weight too, so you could find a complimentary colour to line it. If that's too complicated, how about a bag with cotton lining, or a hot water bottle cover? Even a pencil case or purse would be do-able with that fabric. You could even just cut out the owls and applique them onto something else.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

Planned to make blankets for all my daughters, granddaughters and daughters in law last year.....12 in all...much too ambitious, did get them done, finishing the last one at 2am on 25th, but have decided that this year all my gifts will be things like socks, hats, teacosies, scarves, slippers and gloves, think that I may even have most of the wool needed so it could be a rather frugal Christmas, which is just what I need this year.

i am from the u.s. and folks here dont seem to use hot water bottles much. HOWEVER, it is 6 degrees here today and i think if friends/family HAD them to use, they would LOVE them!!!
so- i can't crochet/knit without a loom!! can you use fleece or flannel to make a cover?? and do they leak at all?? if i can find a good sale on the bottles themselves, i think personalized covers might be fun/easy to make for christmas next!! :-)

Started on my 'pattern' for my owl bag :) (out of greaseproof haha) found some possible bits of fabric that I can use for wings etc just need to put everything together and have a good mess tomorrow see what looks good, then I can see what else I need and pick it up over the weekend! I don't want to go to work tomorrow, I want to sew!

Thanks babyshoes I'll have a look on Sat :) sounds like a future plan even if I don't use it for the 11yo :)

I have made hot water bottle covers out of an old woolen scarf. I got two out of an old football scarf - good gift for footie fans! I just cut the scarf in half and then folded each half in half again (short end to short end). I used wool to stitch up each of the longer sides of the rectangle - so I end up with a pocket with an open top. Then I got a length of matching ribbon and put the bottle inside the pocket, with the nozzle facing the open end. Then I weaved the ribbon through the open end (a few inches down from the top - just through natural gaps in the wool weave) - to make a drawstring closure. Then tie the ribbon into a bow - and you're done. The bow can be untied and bottle removed as needed. I hope that makes sense. I did one of these in five minutes. A really quick but impressive make. Good if like us you have lots of scarves around the place.
