Don't Throw Food Away Challenge

My first confession - half a bag of spinach now lives in the food bin.
It was bought when reduced on the BB date for 40p and I've used about half of it so that's 20p gone. It had gone a bit slimy so I don't think it could have been eaten.
On the positive side, instead of buying another loaf of bread I dug a packet of bagels out of the freezer for lunches for the rest of the week.0 -

made HM pizzas for dinner and used a leftover half carton of passata to make the sauce, but it was on its last legs so threw away what was left after making the pizza - around 1/4 of the carton which I think was 29p, so only 8p in total, but still not a good start!
On the plus side, pizzas are good to use up random leftovers and I used up the end bit of the bag of spinach and some mushrooms which might have ended up chucked in a day or two
for another time, remember passata /tinned tomatoes etc freeze very well x0 -
I have a confession to make - I am of an earlier generation where waste was less tolerated than today - but I threw away the dregs of a carton of OOD cream and a few teaspoonsful of OOD bought coleslaw this morning
I don't tend to worry too much about dates on items tbh (after all, veg grown in the garden don't come with dates, and neither do the eggs that my chickens lay, or the things I cook or bake), but these two really did not look very tempting at all
Serves me right for buying coleslaw instead of making it, which is dead easy in the processorand MUCH nicer!

Thanks, but it had already been frozenI froze it when on its last legs already and as it looked a bit unappetising once defrosted I used what I needed then chucked the rest. Serves me right for being so disorganised when I first opened it!
Proud of myself today as I made lentil and veg soup and after putting the carrots, onions and leek in the pot to soften, I was dismayed to find some VERY bendy celery in the fridge I'd meant to pop in the soup but forgotten about. But I chopped it up super fast and chucked it in, it would have definitely had to be chucked otherwise.Part time working mum | Married in 2014 | DS born 2015 & DD born 2018

Don't know if you already knew this but you can freeze fritters and just reheat them in the oven.0 -
Have squeezed the last of the (now tired-looking) clementines and used that as the liquid to cook some wrinkled apples and a punnet of those plums that are supposed to ripen but never do. I'll eat the compote on porridge for breakfast this week.
Put on a pan of mixed root veg (potatoes, onions, carrots, sweet potatoes and parsnips) to make mash for dinner and a fry-up tomorrow. Threw the rest of the carrots and sweet potatoes into the slow cooker with a head of celery, lentils, tomato puree and rosemary.
Family pack of mushrooms sliced and cooked with garlic. Should buy me another couple of days...
Lurking fruit and veg now: a net of lemons, a bag of peppers, some new potatoes, a mixing bowl full of small, home grown butternut squash...and rather a lot of ageing potatoes and onions under the sink.import this0 -

Sounds like the perfect base for French onion soup...soften some sliced onions in a little butter or oil, pour over the sauce and heat through. Traditionally, you'd float cheese on toast (made with French bread) on the top, but just crusty bread and butter would be yummy.import this0 -
First throw away of the year... Two slices of value ham hiding behind something else in fridge estimated at 20p. Dd and friend polished off the last of the twiglets last night, so that's another christmas leftover used up:)November NSD's - 70

Hi All, hoping this is he right place to post my question.
We had frozen turkey for Christmas. I boxed up some left over bits on Christmas day and froze it. I took this out Tues night & left to thaw in fridge and forgot about it . So that is 36hrs ish ago. Do you think it would be ok to pop this in a pot to make up some stock & soup or do you think I have missed my window and pushing it?
Thanks.
P.S. Glad I have come across this thread :Tit has brought to mind something that I think I need to address.Frugal Challenge £9000

another good day, we cooked less for dinner and happy to report no leftovers except to little fried potatoes on dd plate. she did try really hard to finish so im very pleased. there is some old bread that i shall have to do something with. thinking of turning it in to bread crumbs and freezing. also possibly some carrots which can turn into soup.
so is the idea i work out roughly how much the potatoe cost and note that as waste? You can if you think you can .0
