Could you take it in to work? I know anything like that popped in our staffroom would disappear in minutes

Thanks Katzen, that would have been a great idea, however I got home last night to find my OH had eaten half of it! No need to worry after all as it seems it may go at home! :rotfl:

Aggghhhh started the month off so good then last few days gone very wrong. 1/3 rd of a pot of yogurt had to go yesterday, tasted it and it was so sour so another 18 pence down the drain.

Dont throw food away challenge Feb £0.51/£5.00
    MARCH £62.38/250
  • OH has defrosted 1kg of bacon scraps, having not bothered to portion them out (doh!). They really need to be cooked up in the next day or two, Does anyone have any idea what to make with them?
So far I have thought of chicken and bacon pie and chicken and bacon hotpot.

Use some up in a quiche or make a risotto and add some to that or I like to make a mushroom sauce to go over some cooked pasta and always add what there is left so it could be bacon, cooked sausages cut up, leeks, small pieces of cooked chicken, roasted tomatoes etc etc. There is always an omelette as well.

  • had 1/2 can of coconut milk leftover from soup this week. I made 12 coconut and cherry muffins with odds and ends in stock cupboard :)
  • I thought I was doing too well this month! Have had collosal wastage this weekend:

    2 x corn tortillas = 40p
    1/3 tub creme fraiche = 35p
    2 strawberries = 24p
    1/2 banana = 10p
LO sauce for lamb (defrosted thinking it was soup, it was very much not!) = 50p

    = £1.59 + £1.90 = £3.19 for this month so far.

I know it's not a terrible total for a month, but it's just annoying because it's avoidable waste. This is what happens when you let the OH 'manage' the fridge for a week!! I told him to make sure nothing went off, to find a use for things, but he ignored the fact that the creme fraiche had only 1 day left (we managed to use 2/3s of the pot with chicken fajitas on Friday night, despite it being 2 days out of date), ignored the 1/2 banana going black (now mouldy), the soft strawberries (now mouldy), and left out the LO corn tortillas from the fajitas on Friday instead of wrapping them in some clingfilm and freezing them.

I am really hoping there's no more waste between now and Thursday when the month ends!!!

Total fail again this week for me :( - fur-coat tomatoes; mushy cucumber; OOD soup; 29 very-OOD eggs - how the heck did they escape my beady eyes for a month ?; OOD yoghurt; OOD SmartPrice coleslaw/pot salad.

I really need to stop using the top shelf of my fridge for storing 'spare stuff'. From now on it's only for full bottles of milk that can be laid on their sides ............ instead of standing them upright on the middle shelf :o.

Not buying any more fresh stuff this week - certainly not getting any more salad-stuff until the weather warms up enough to make me WANT to eat it. Using up the remaining fresh veg/fruit that we've got in and then making a start on the frozen stuff to make a dent in the freezer contents.
  • Ive gone over my budget for not throwing any food away. Although it was an experiment. I bought a pack of fresh chefs selection veg (fresh baby corn, green beans, mange tout and mini carrots), i froze them in the packet rather than blanche and then freeze. When i defrosted them they were all squishy with water. The baby corn smelt musty and the mange tout and carrots looked off. So that was a £1.13 experiment that went wrong. I wont be trying to freeze fresh veg straight in there packets again!
  • Would love to join you all if that's okay!? I've also just joined the MGC, today being my first day. So may aswell go the whole hog. I normally use everything up, within an inch of it's life.

So far i have thrown out app four strawberries which had gone mushy, but on the plus side have used up some celery in tonight's tea which has been sat in the fridge for far too long, and some tired looking salad with dinner.

So i'd estimate that to be about 15p. Will update signature shortly and report back again when needed.

    Good Luck all :)

One onion that was bad all the way through when I cut into it. Came in a huge bag that I got for £1 from the market so probably only around 7 or 8 pence worth. And, with two days to go, that is it for the whole of February.

Sticking with £1 as my target for March
