Depends if you can handle living in the North if you're from down Sarf!
Well I handled it for 23 years before I moved down South and can still speak the language.0 -

I live in South Lancashire and think we have pretty good value, plus we have good motorway and rail links- where I live I can easily commute to anywhere in the NW. I also like that fact that there is so much countryside easily accessible.0

Yes I like Anglesey, but the object isn't to find a house priced at the maximum I could possibly pay, but something good value, and 275k sounds an awful lot for a remote location in the North. There are plenty of detached properties on the island for far less than this. I suppose the things to watch out for are internet speeds and gas supply, a lot of properties are electrically heated, this is OK though.

Sorry, I think this looks really grim and depressing!
We once had a disastrous holiday on Anglesey so I am probably a bit biased (apologies to anyone who lives there).0 -

As I said before, what is "good value?" Because it's subjective you need to define what you're after. In some places north of Manchester £275K will get you a superb house with 4 beds, double garage, land and gardens. In some parts of the Lakes you're lucky if you can get a garage plot with potting shed. Unless you have a list of preferences people can't possibly suggest anything sensible.0 -

Moved to Donegal several years ago from England and love it, Donegal is in the Republic but borders the North, or Northern Ireland. Donegal is beautiful, the people are so friendly, you can leave cars, doors unlocked, kids can roam free without fear of molestation and you housewise you get a lot for your money. I know that isn't everything, but for us personal safety was a big issue. Some parts of Northern Ireland are breathtakingly beautiful and for the most part, people are very welcoming and friendly. Everything and everyone just seems that bit calmer. It's a tough question to answer, because everyone wants different things out of life.Maybe you should do a short list, go and stay in b and b's and tour the area, while looking at properties. That way you can get a really good feel for an area. Good luck.
Donegal is amazing it has to be said but in my view (I hope you don't mind me saying so) the same effect can be achieved in West Tyrone or in Fermanagh, around the lakelands. Absolute peace and quiet with large villages and towns within an easy drive - and still in the UK.0 -

Well I don't think a 275k 3 bed bungalow is good value in Anglesey when there is one going for 135k. Perhaps it has a good school nearby or enormous garden which is of little use to me.
In a way I have already defined what I don't need: schools, transport, large gardens because of pain. There's only one of me so a 4 bedroom house is over the top, So anywhere which attracts a premium for these will be bad value. On the other hand not so remote so broadband and gas is unavailable, so it is cheap to run and can carry on working from home. I don't want noisy neighbours on an adjoining wall, so it should be probably detached.
In general Anglesey looks about as good as anywhere. I need to take a holiday there as someone suggested and ask around.
What would the locals think of the English buying property there, perhaps they have moved in already! Same with Ireland perhaps.
Found some good advice here on negotiating prices.0 -

Same here......on both counts
House looks very grim and whilst Anglesey is, I'm sure lovely when the sun is shining, we also had a terrible holiday there (albeit in a beautiful period house with a pool) and found the place very miserable in the constant rain......so much so I wouldn't fancy going back!Mortgage-free for fourteen years!
