Where is the best value place to live in the country considering...

I own (fully paid) terraced house in the South East (175k) wish to move to a better property elsewhere in the country, and have additional capital to spare. Let's say 100k. Where would you choose?

Other considerations are that I don't have strong ties in area, and no family, so no need to worry about school catchment area.

Hate noise from adjoining houses, so detached would be ideal. However low maintenance is important due to back/neck pain.

I am self employed, work mainly via internet, and drive, so communications are not important (although internet connection speeds might be a consideration)

However, I probably don't see property as a good medium term investment, in fact rather afraid prices might crash if interest rates rise.

For somewhere with good transport links and some attractive countryside have a look at the East Midlands north of Birmingham. For £275K you could easily buy a large modern 4 bedroom detached. Similar prices, with some spectacular scenery but further away from London and with fewer large city facilities there is Co Durham and perhaps North Yorkshire.

TBH, most places in the countryside with the exception of the SE would be more than affordable for what you are after.

I myself am looking for a property around the £200000 mark and have similar lack of ties etc. I have looked at North Yorks, Cumbria, Norfolk, Suffolk, Devon, Dorset, Cornwall and Wales and have found quite a lot of affordable detached properties with no near neighbours etc, but nearby to large towns/transport etc.

I think you would be better off thinking of which areas appeal to you, then looking at the criteria you want and see if its available in those places.

    Quite an odd question really.

I'd live where I want to live, factoring in mind my personal life, hobbies and interests, the VFM of houses would have little or no impact on that decision. Barring central London you can buy a nice house anywhere in the country with £275,000. So decide where you want to live and find a suitable house in that location.

I know some people up in the North West particularly the Wirral, so I guess that would be an option. The country would suit me better than a town, might get a dog! I thought someone would say outer Hebrides in jest, but didn't that turn out to be the highest in quality lifestyle in a recent survey?

Problem is I don't wish to be throwing capital and moving up the housing ladder in a market which is declining in real terms. I've been waiting of a crash which has never fully happened although prices have declined in some areas.

I also have a friend with a similar idea, and she wants me to live 'next door to her'. Unfortunately she likes period houses, large gardens, has little income and is partially disabled, surely these characteristics don't go together!

I would disagree, in the city I live in a detached house as requested by OP would cost many K more than that!

In which case, don't put any more money into property voluntarily. Stick with what you have until you are sure about the market (or until you get fed up with it, and are prepared to take the risk).

I would go with Kent, or Worcestershire. Both offer VFM whilst being accessible.
