You will always have a reason to get keep an object - you need to find a better or several reasons to get rid of it

So you could repurpose that apple crate into a perfect little hedgehog house. One day  but
    • your OH will leave you if you don't reduce the carp in the garage so they can park the car in there
    • you know there are no hedgehogs in your immediate area
    • it's easy to dispose of because it's just wooden slats that could be broken down and poked into a wheely bin anyway
    • in the event that you ever saw a hedgie you could easily get another crate form the market
    • you are not emotionally attached to it
    • you've got better things to do with your time
    • and something has got to go so it might as well be this crate!
BlossomHill I LOVE this piece of advice and I will be using it when I am trying to hold on to things :)

Yet more clearing and sorting in dd 1 and dd 2's room it is almost completely tidy and clear now just a couple of folded piles of clothes that I don't know what I'm doing with for one reason or another

Dd3's room is a hoarders paradise :(. Such a shame! I started tackling it this morning but then a lengthy phonecall from my mum and some searching on the Internet for her has left me with a pounding head. (National register searching I will explain no further)

I NEED to sort dd3's room but she has clothes everywhere bar her wardrobe and I'm not sure that even when I sort it that the stuff stays there longer than 10mins. She has toys of hers and her sisters (her room is the wrong shape for 2 beds but other room is so small it doesn't really fit toys). She also has, I'm ashamed to say, part of the monster ironing pile in her room (purely because she had clear floor space). I need to get it sorted and presentable and ready to put bunk beds in (whenever I can afford them) so she and dd middle can share so dd1 has the small room to herself and her millions of books lol

Head has eased a bit now I may go for a bath and then see how much headway I can make in littles room!

I have sorted through my handbag this morning.

Also got myself organised for childcare this year (as much as possible).

I'm not a hoarder but I like to read about how you're all getting on.

I've read about various issues some of you have with ironing piles and I thought I'd share my sisters strategy with you.

Hang it up un-ironed in the right wardrobe and iron as needed. (for those who just cant stand the thought of spending a day or more trying to get on top of the mountain) At least this way it's not getting dusty and you don't keep tripping over it!;)

This year - is there something in the boxes? Or are they just - boxes. is the stuff in them of any use, value or ornament?

What would happen if you just - got rid?

Mostly they're collectable toys and parts which are "to be sold" but there are also just boxes of ancient toot - I would cheerfully hire a skip and dump a good lot of them in it without looking! (a bar of Old Spice soap, one slipper with the sole half off, fragranced drawer cushions that have long lost their fragrance etc - stuff a charity shop would bin!)

The selling of the collectables is very slow in getting started, it's going out at a rate of 5 small widgets a week when there's a good 5000 widgets in one box, for example. :o

This is what I do (pretty much forced to, LOL due to no other space!)
I also hang clothes on hangers on the airer, maximises the potential drying area so they're ready to be put straight in the wardrobe once dry and aired.

I have a thing about clothes and storing clothes I feel very very uneasy if they are not ironed before being put away and folded correctly etc

With box contents, if the box is in the same place it is hard to look through and decide you don't need it.

Could you have a 'sorting table' in a particular room of the house, or in someone else's house; it is much easier to see tat as tat in a different place?

Also, could you have an agreement to start that you will go thro the boxes together and get rid if rubbish contents first? Once you are used to that anxiety-provoking task, then you can condense boxes together and clear corners, then rooms. DH will still have the comfort of boxes until he realises he no longer needs it.

I really think this is the best solution. Things in hoarders' wardrobes often need a once over with an iron any way due to hanging rail squash crumpling.:)
