Yes it is worth it. Much better than cabbing everywhere, that can really add up. Parking is free on the strip. It's also free Downtown with validation at the casino cage.

Valley of Fire, Hoover dam, Red Rock Scenic Loop and Spring Mountain Ranch to name a few sights worth a look off the top of my head. I'm sure others will mention more.

we can't imagine a trip without a hire car...if nothing else just to do the WalMart run and visit some off-strip casinos but agree that there are any number of places you could visit within a relatively short drive.

That said, we wouldn't normally take the hire car out to casino hop on the strip so it's hard to say if it would be worth it for that...and we do normally just take the SDX if going downtown in the evening.

Some days I admit the car stays parked in the parking garage of our hotel and not used...but most days it gets taken out for at least one trip...but plenty of days we go casino hopping off-strip...go to see a movie...take in a In N Out Burger, etc...do some shopping...some trips that is all we use the car for (other than getting back to the airport) - others we go exploring a bit further afield.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
  • I'm plastered almost 24/7 when I'm in Vegas so the idea of a hire car is completely strange to me!

    haha !!!!! :D:D:D

I remember seeing on here early in the year that someone had got the Aria to pricematch against Lowcostusa (and had a better and quick response from Aria for the best price deal, etc compared to other hotels)...
So i'm hoping that when the price does drop a bit, ie to under £600, then i'll approach Aria direct and see if they will match and beat by 10% as advertised....

Have done the 3+5 nights, or 4+4, etc etc, but doing the full 8 days works out to be cheapest......

My idea is to do this:
Book the first 3 nights in the Sig...... then off to LA for 3 nights (already booked), then back to Vegas for the remaining 8 nights....
Max budget allowed for hotels is £850 for the 14 nights...
Already spent £143 for 3 nights in LA, so got some serious deals to find!! :D:D:D
We do have 600k LP's on myVegas between us at the mo, that will push to around 1 million LP's by the time we go..... but given were going over the Memorial wkend dates, doubtful any myvegas hotel rewards will be available.... will soon see though :D

oh, and any of you watch 'Vegas Police' on telly ? quite funny watching that! :D
  • might sound daft, but has anyone ever had a driving lesson in the States?

The main thing which stops me hiring a car, is not knowing about how signs work, etc.!

Driving in the US is simpler than here in the UK I can only think of one or two differences:- 1. drive on the right seem obvious but if you find yourself in an area with no traffic blunders can occur!
    2. Four way junctions, these confused me for a while but basically
first there has right of way.

All hire cars are automatic which if you have not driven them before will cause a few 10g stops until you stop pressing the clutch (which is not there)

turning right on a red light? all that kind of thing worries me a bit! i'm sure there's lots of online help, youtube videos to watch, etc. :)
  • Watch out for 'no right on red' signs. It's not always ok to turn right on red, but unless there is a sign then you are fine. I always have a good look for a sign before I do it.

Another one, unlikely to happen in Vegas due to there being no parking on the streets, it's so modern and parking is in car parks. Don't park facing the wrong way when you're on a street. I got a parking ticket at Griffith Park in LA for doing this. One of these things you do at home without thinking...and you wouldn't expect to be a problem. I read up on it afterwards. Apparently it's a sign that you have broken the law by driving on the wrong side of the road, and that you intend to do it again soon. :rotfl:

And one more that you might not expect. I only found this out recently (someone told me...not one I got caught with!!). Alcohol must be locked away from the driver and passengers in a car. Locked glovebox or in the boot.
  • Loads of new shares on Social Rewards for me. Quite a lot of vidoes and tweet/retweets....so I'm working my way through them just now, and not even using my shares to do most of it!!

You must come to a complete stop at a stop sign. Easier said than done actually!
