Well, that's us finally booked for September 2014. We fly out to Phoenix on the 5th. We will stay a couple of nights in Scottsdale, then drive over to the Canyon. Probably stay one night in Sedona or Flagstaff, then over to Laughin for one more night. Then up to Vegas on the 9th (which is my 40th OMG). Need to soften the blow somehow!

Which hotels are you using Lesley (toying with doing something similar but not worked out the details yet)

All the best people are Virgos...I'm the 7th ;)

Well, I assume you are talking about the full trip and not just the Vegas part. I've not booked any of the hotels yet, but so far I'm looking at the Springhill Suites North Scottsdale. It's diagonally opposite a Maggiano's and various surrounding shops. We'll have a car, but that gives us something to do in the evening. Then in Sedona or Flagstaff it would be one night and I briefly looked at a Courtyard by Marriott (not sure if Sedona or Flagstaff), really need to look at this one again as it's the one I've not really chosen yet at all. Laughlin we looked at Harrah's (really cheap with Total Rewards), or maybe the Golden Nugget because they have rooms that overlook the pool deck and river. Pool deck looks nice too...but maybe we wouldn't be using it. I also looked at Aquarius.

In Vegas we are thinking of staying at Platinum for the whole time. Have emailed them for a price, but the guy we usually book through is off till the 6th, but I have another contact that said he'd get back to us on Sunday.

Well, my 40th will be our 14th trip to Vegas. Don't think I'll catch up on the number of trips taken by Pebbles though!!

Don't want to alarm you,but our first trip to vegas was for my 40th.
Had 8 trips since then, and looking to book for first half of next year.

Oh....the alarming part....it doesn't seem like five minutes since that first visit in 2004....this next trip will be for my 50th.
And I worried about turning 40

I did wonder what was going to be alarming about it lol. Oh, I hope the next decade doesn't fly by....although I do often find myself wishing my life away by saying I wish I was retiring.

That explains why BA prices from Gatwick are down £86 to £549 this morning!

Already booked mine at that price months ago.

My first trip was the year I was 40. Not for my birthday, just a trip. I'm currently in Vegas on my 23rd trip, 13 years later.

The Harrahs in Laughlin has a beach that is a great place to have that early morning coffee alongside the river, quite convenient for the river taxis which is a nice way to have a photo op for all the riverside casinos. There is also a river trip down the Colorado to lake Havasu and the old London Bridge. The shopping/ outlet centre has a reasonable choice, the first time I tried Dairy Queen. Cross the river into Bullhead and you cross a timezone found that out when we went over to visit a laundromat, left just before 8am to be early doors and ended up standing outside with it all shut at 7am local meh!

A scenic drive into Kingman with a tourist shop and museum and one of those big Casey Jones locos across the road.

Harrahs was fine and they will take your comps off the bill when you check out, the Aquarius was a bit more up market and the Colorado Belle has a very good brew house and restaurant in it.

I new America was big but coming from a small island like here it took my satnav to force it home. Drove from Laughlin to LA, headed south to I40 and the satnav told me to turn right (ok so far) when I turned onto the I40 it said "drive 196miles and turn right" I did half expect there not to be any turn offs in between....naive or just a Brit in a big land!

Thanks for the info on Laughlin. We have been before, but never stayed over or got on a boat. We drove down via Boulder City (which I like for a wander, it's so old fashioned compared to Vegas). It was a cloudy day in a September and weirdly cool weather when we left Vegas about 8 or 9am. We got to Laughlin and it was comfortable, but the sun came out and it became rather unbearable.

We would like to see London Bridge, and I had forgotten we saw boat trips. Would save us from driving down there (unless we feel we need to be in the air-conditioned car!!). I had also forgotten there were water taxis, we just walked along the 'riverwalk' last time. I remember Harrah's being so far over, and I'm not sure if I'd rather be in the middle like at Golden Nugget or Aquarius.

    Is Bullhead worth a visit?
