I started writing a multiquoted reply but the computer ate it. Gah!

Basically, what I wanted to say was, KT, rogueylawyer has some good tips, but I'm not sure about the maths in the section 'How much oil do I need' on that website she linked to: my mum is a qualified aromatherapist and she always says you should never use more than 3 drops of essential oil per 10ml of carrier oil, and that site says you can use 5 drops, which is obviously almost double.

Another thing to watch out for in essential oils is phototoxicity (or photosensitization) when certain oils can break down into other compounds in sunlight, which can lead to burning and skin damage, and those oils shouldn't be massaged into the skin for at least 12 hours before exposure to sunlight. It's mainly the citrus oils - lemon, lime and bitter orange - but there can be others, so if you have the SLIGHTEST doubt, look it up, prefereably in a reputable book, before you use them. (I've looked at several decentish websites while looking up oil properties and found slight differences in all of them...a book could be the same, but it's generally better quality controlled.)

Also - and this is a biggie - NEVER ingest essential oils. I've read some really well regarded books on essential oils, and it seems that some American trained and based aromatherapists consider it OK to drink essential oils or add them to food. It is totally unrecommended in the UK as the oils are so concentrated that they could damage the cells of the digestive tract and beyond, so if you ever read anything at all - a book, a website, a text message from a mate who swears (s)he knows what (s)he is doing - ignore them! :rotfl:

Thanks InaPickle! I think I am going to be particularly over cautious to be honest, sounds like there could be some nasty side effects otherwise.

Ingesting essential oils?! Yeah certainly doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
  • [QUOTE=kiplingmonkey;58736123]Hi Sunshineyday - is this the spray you use?

    Two more UU to report:

Radox bath foam which I was using as liquid soap as I have a lot of bottles of bath form

M&S Lavender Body Lotion, it was ok, didn't really fancy it as a lotion so I used it in place of shaving foam instead.

Brings the remaining stash down to 97 items with no INs this month.

Ooh will have to look into the aromastone - sounds great. Thanks for all the tips.

I have an aromastone too - it's much safer than using an oil burner with a candle, keep it on my bedside table so I can use at night and it doesn't matter if I fall asleep with it on.

I got mine from this web site:-

    http://www.quinessence.com/products/aroma_stone_electric_vaporiser-50.htm

I get a lot of my oils from there too. They stock some good books too, though probably cheaper to buy from Amazon.

    This is my favourite one:-

It's not got lots of pretty pictures, but it's got so many practical ideas, find it really useful.

Bergamot is the worst oil for photosensitivity - you can buy a version called bergamot FCF which has the photosensitive bit removed.

And I agree about not adding to food or drinking, I would never think of doing that.

To be honest with essential oils I would say it's better just to buy pre blended products unless you know enough to do it safely.

What I learned on my Neal's Yard course was that different blend strengths can be used on different parts of the body, e.g. face oil no more than 1%, body oil no more than 2.5%, but if I was making up something to use on just a small part of the body, can go to 5%, provided skin not broken - really have to avoid using on broken skin.

In drops 2.5% blend is 1 drop for every 2ml of oil, so 5 drops for every 10ml, but then for your face, that should only be 2 drops for every 10ml. I think given that message came from Neal's Yard I'd be happy to say that's safe.

However, underlying all that, some oils have a maximum amount you should use in general so even in a 1% blend, you might only be able to use 0.5% of a particular oil, and some I probably wouldn't use on my face at all. We studied a bunch of different oils on my course and were given safety data for all of them which I'd refer to if making a blend not based on a trusted book.

However, it's hard to go wrong using an oil burner or a small number of drops properly dispersed in a bath, it's more about stuff applied directly to the skin.

I admit I have been keeping an eye on the Philosophy stuff in Boots to see if it goes on sale. I saw it was half-price on the website, but it's still full-price in store. The shelves are festooned with products covered in Christmas packaging which looks odd.
