Vodafone charging £30 per day for USA data woot even using phone

I have just come back from a weekend in American to find that Vodafone have charged me £30 twice for two days of data roaming even though I turned the data off on my iPhone and left it in the hotel room safe for the whole time we were there.
When I called CS they were useless and could only offer £10 credit against the £60 charge I have had taken from m bank account. Absolutely disgusting bearing in mind I didn't even use the phone.
Considering changing networks as they don't seem to care about me as a customer...!
Has anyone had similar problems?

You will have used the data - albeit unintentionally. A software update on the iOS 6 firmware supposedly fixed this issue - but be bottom line remains, you are responsible for any usage and Your network has to pay te foreign network for your connectivity.

A complaint to Apple might be more appropriate, but I think you'll know they won't be doing refunds.

As for the phone network 'not caring' well - what did you expect when the roamed service was used?

    nonsense as usual

If the data charges were due to a technical problem that Vodafone(UK) were unaware of then the OP liability for the bill is debatable.

If the data charges were due to a technical problem that Vodafone were well aware of then I would suggest that the responsibility for the bill is between Vodafone(UK) and the various companies they have their billing agreements with.

If I were leaving my phone in the safe, I'd have it switched off.

Any particular reason you left it on?

I used to work for vodafone.
Ask them to list what all the data charges were for, they can do it.
If it was for things that update automatically then as said, I would push for more/total compensation as this is an issue they will be aware of.

I too would have had it turned off though if in a safe. Even receiving a text message will cost.
  • Hey as Vodafone have billed you for "usage" in the correct country and not Afghanistan or Serbia then I still struggle to disagree with their charges. The known issues are not with the service provider but the hardware surely. Who takes up the issue with Apple ?
  • Thanks for the feedback, just seems ridiculous that when you turn the data off it still downloads software updates! And how Vodafone can justify £30 per day is beyond me

Thought... when did you turn off data roaming? Before or after you arrived? I always turn mine off before I leave the UK just to be sure...

And people wonder why Vodafone CS is so shocking...
