            Is this not the problem?
We all know cuts are needed but when its cuts which effect us its a different matter.
We deserve more pain for being so dumb
not at all - it is not the fact that I am losing the benefit that bothers me - it is the fact that people on much higher combined incomes are keeping theirs.
how can it be fair that a household on 60k with one earner and say, 3 children lose the benefit, whilst a family on 98k split between two earners, with 1 child, will keep the full benefit.
It is just idiotic. any govt that can come up with this scenario is UNFIT to govern.
Personally, I would have advocated the end of Child Benefit for all. Just get rid of it. That is fair.0 -

It would have to be a very, very subtle subplot to draw that conclusion! But we shall see!Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

I thought they did it in this way because it is a non means tested benefit? and they had to put the line somewhere?The_White_Horse wrote: »not at all - it is not the fact that I am losing the benefit that bothers me - it is the fact that people on much higher combined incomes are keeping theirs.

Bob I didn't either but if we take 'we' as the nation then yes we did!
For me its the elephant in the room, no one seems to mention personal debt yet how can we expect a consumer led recovery with the debt hanging around 'our' necks?
We need to live within our means which means more stores closing and more pain. It's very similar to whats happening via cuts no one wants the cuts but 'we' can't afford to spend more than we earn.
Even those who didn't spend above their means benefited from the spending of those who did. Those people were spending today's and tomorrow's money yesterday. It made the economy look great when, in fact, it was anything but.
We are certainly not going to see a consumer led recovery, nor sadly are we likely to see an export led recovery. Any recovery is likely to be a long time coming, and when/if it does it is the construction industry which is likely to provide that boost."When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty." - Thomas Jefferson0 -

True, but that does not mean that Government Policy should be indefensible. Having no entitlement to Child Benefit whatever my income, I can say that the system contrived by GO is absurdly inept and unfair for the reasons TWH states.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment.
