  • doing quite well spends wise this month. Also made a start going through all my drawers/cupboards to work out what I NEED in there.

My work colleague is doing av0n, and orders are due this week, but I don't need anything (and even have a ban on toiletries and make-up), so will just have to take the catalogue back. I like their stuff, but most of the stuff I buy is because I feel guilty if I don't place an order, and you can't just place an order for £2.

Well, yes, because I'm collecting their holiday tokens I need to buy it everyday until I get 10. Do need to adopt that level of scrutiny though :o

Aaah, I see. I wondered if that might be the reason. I sometimes forget that people have different priorities to me. It's because I have a high level of scrutiny, that I am not in debt.

Take for instance the subject of holidays. I wouldn't buy a paper to save coupons, because one of the reasons they put them in there is to sell more papers. Also the holidays they offer are not my cup of tea, and I can read the papers online for free. My frugal holidays involve a lot of walking and staying in Youth Hostels, that's how I manage to keep them affordable.

I find the psychology behind the 'wants' v 'needs' debate very interesting, mainly because I am aware of the differences every time I make a purchase. Almost everything I buy has to be a 'need'. If I 'want' something I have to justify it to myself. Of course I have some treats, life would be very boring without them.

Sorry I didn't mean to have a go at you, you gave me something to think about.

Well done on giving the catalogue back if you don't need anything. I hate those catalogues that come through the door. Luckily I don't have any work colleagues to thrust them into my hand.

Gah! popped into store today and no luck :( annoying thing is that I remember walking past some the other day, in face they were about the only xmas things left and I didn't pay attention to them. Can you believe they are still full price on the website too
God I am glad I grabbed them when I did then, my mum also got me the pizza express storage jar for 80p but she treated me. The keyring is also still at full price.

I was so proud of myself yesterday, I went to a big shopping centre took back two items that I had brought on gift cards that were presents to me but when got the items home thought I wasnt 100% happy with them so rather than doing what i would used to do which is wear once and then not again, I thought I dont really want or need these items. I got the money put back on gift cards and left the shop. I will hold onto them for when I really do need an item ie a party to go to etc. Had a little walk around the shops looking for little presents but decided didnt want to ruin a NSD so left and went back to work.

Thanks, Ilona. I didn't perceive that you were having a go at me; as I say I need to adopt your level of scrutiny. That is why you are not in debt & I am in a lot :( The psychology of spending is something that I would really like to look into. Generally, I am a very level headed, intelligent person who used to have a very good grip on my finances so I need to identify what has changed & why?!

You too have given me something to think about:)

Yay well done Sazdaz!!!! I was also very proud of myself today! Returned some non-needed boots to M&S & got £20 put back on my card (used this for an overpayment on CC). Bought some needed rolls & a newspaper & left! Avoided all the other yummy items in their food hall (unheard of!) & all of their sale items in the clothes section. This is a definite shift in mood/behaviour :T
  • I am very pleased with myself...i turned down a jumper that was offered to me by my mum in the sales that she decided she didnt want.,..!

Well my thoughts of NEED not WANT's have abandoned me recently and i feel dreadful for the money i have spent :(

I never realised how angry i would feel with myself for caving already, Ok far enough the stuff i bought today was stuff i needed for my sons birthday, but that was budgeted out of next months money, so now im going to struggle this month, and next month more than likely won't save the money i should of this month (if that makes sense lol)

Why can't i just stay away from the shops! Many people say a bit of retail therapy helps your moods, well this bit well and truely sent me in a bad mood as i have now messed up my whole month.

Can only move on from this though!! Need to think of what i need, not want!!! Arghhhh lol

Hi Suze, don't know if they still do, one year The Sun newspaper gave codes online which you could collect without having to buy the paper every day. It was 10 different words you got from their website, and when you booked you had to type them in to the screen - was good as we were able to book the holiday online instead of all the faff of posting tokens off.

Not sure if I've explained it right. Think my friend signed up to an alert and every day she got a new code.

Got a 6 person caravan in Newquay, was a good base for a holiday :)

Deff 'needed' cat food today - pud was on hunger strike due to no pouches left (not that it would do her any harm to lose a little bit anyway) Prob didn't need the blue cheese I bought at lunch too but it was reduced from £3 to £1.50 - some lovely creamy one made with Jersey milk.

Still kicking myself about the owl and the !!!!!cat bits I missed
