it isnt rocket science to see that if the teachers presented the work that they already had planned rather than witholding it out of spite, then this could go some way to preventing the hold up later down the line. It is responsible of parents to mitigate the effects of taking the kid out of school and going through the work with them goes someway to that.

I think schools should routinely put lessons online anyway, so pupils and parents can look at home.

Colleges and universities do it, but schools don't.

It would be of massive benefit to children with SENs for a start, as let's face it, parents often know far more about additional needs than teachers do.

You don't really think mere parents are capable of understanding the primary curriculum and helping their child catch up, do you?

What, without a teaching degree?? Surely not! :p

zagfle, thank you for your suggestions, but I have to say that doesn't seem like a great deal to me at all.
You don't think £50 return for a flight to Italy is a good deal? How much would expect to pay? Even the £100 return to Naples I think was a good deal, for the 4 of us it was £400 plus hotel for 10 nights at £700, total £1100. A package for a week at Easter was going for £500-600pp, so would have been over £2000 for the 4 of us, for just a week, we paid £1100 for 10 days.
My experience of going to the South of France every summer at the end of August, coming back just before the end of hols is massively expensive and has been for many years at least.
The south of France is always expensive. I really don't why people bother, go across the border to Spain and the prices halve. We stayed in a static caravan on a campsite right on the beach just over the border on the Med coast for about EUR80 a night.

Or don't go so far south, stay in the Vendee area, we've had some good deals there.
I even looked at going to Lyon, France in February (visit friends) and again, the prices for returns on the last couple of days of the holiday week (which is not the same than that of the local French) are ridiculous meaning that even though we wouldn't have to pay accommodation, it is way above what is reasonable.
Yes, as I said, beginning and end of half terms flights are much more expensive, because everyone is flying at the same time. August and Easter aren't so bad because people go at different times.
  • I only have to go on holiday agents websites and can tell you when the kids are off school, the price goes through the roof.
A friend of mine was looking to go to Florida for 2 weeks. In the summer holidays it was over £5000. If she went in the June the same holiday was £2,500...

Yes, plus going in the UK school holidays to Florida is horrible, unless you're lucky enough to have 2 weeks in May/June time like some of the schools round here.

It's one place I would take the kids out of school to go. Christmas and Easter are rammed, you'll spend most of the day stood in queues at the theme parks, and August is baking hot, humid, thundery and the peak hurricane season, as well as being busy!

We went in November many years ago, before we had kids, and couldn't believe how cheap it was, flights about £200 each and motels about $30 a night. There is so much accomodation round the Orlando/Kissimee area that it's dirt cheap off-peak. Flights have gone up a lot since then though :(

But £1100 for many families is much more than what they can afford so even if you can find some better deals many families can ONLY afford the term time prices.

The best time for Florida is Oct/Nov or around Feb/March. The only people who go to Florida in August are the crazy brits.

Is a holiday abroad some sort of right then? I know plenty of people who have never been abroad and it wouldn't occur to them to do so as it's outside their budget.

yes....the choice to make priorities for their family is a right of theirs. Incidentally, it isnt a right of yours to choose for others.
