    hi nutty netty here

On double uses - i never throw my daughters out grown clothes out - i recycle as follows: - t shirts (particularly the ones with designs) have the sleeves removed and are stuffed with outgrown/worn socks and tights and used as cushions on my daughters bed. Very popular with the favorite t shirts. Her trousers (if they still fit around the middle) i cut the legs off and use as shorts or if they are totally too small i cut the legs off and use them as peg bags or to hold numerous small items in my shed. The top half can also be turned into a nifty bag (denim bags are all the rage at the moment!) Of course it helps to have a modicum of sewing skills for this!

Old vests make excellant car polishing cloths.
Cheap baby wipes are brilliant for cleaning the tv screen/microwave/oven front with out leaving smears. They are also good for cleaning computor key boards as long as they are not too wet. They are usually alcohol based and so dry really quickly.

Odd lengths of plastic drain pipes can be turned into vertical planters by the addition of a few holes cut in the sides with a hack saw. you can put them in a plant pot filled with soil for stability then plant around the base and in the holes for an inexpensive display.

Old lolly sticks make great plant labels

i could go on for ages. My parents were war babies and never let anything go to waste if there was any way it could be reused. Todays goods seem to have a very short life span built in which is creating a very poor attitude to making things last and recycling. My daughters favorite phrase when some toy breaks is "never mind you can always buy another one!" Dos anyone else agree or am I just turning into a "grumpy old woman"?

I have a pond, which I love, BUT, I do get loads of blanket weed, which I hate. I have a friend that has a compost heap, [I don't] anyway he asks me to collect it up for him, as apparrrently it has loads of nutrients. So last week I had cleared out the pond and put the blanket weed into a nice pile for him. Then went on to pot up my hanging baskets and ran out of liners-So I used the blanket weed, could this be another Double Duty? seems to be holding up a week later. Anyone with any thoughts on this one?
Please be gentle and a little kind, as I've only got a simple mind.

Hi Netty, totally agree with you - I hate living in a disposable society.

'Make do and mend' is a phrase your parents would have been very familiar with, too. We always had to when I was young because my parents never had much money, and I guess the habit stuck!

  • Mado and Aussielass, so far I have not been murdered and I enjoy it here. Shame about the Visa restrictions! Also a shame that Australian Moneysavingforums demand paying a subscription fee. Booo!
More double uses: I never buy a binbag, supermarket carriers all the way.
All the knickknack you find in the house can be used artistically by people with no arty bone in their body (and I should know I am one of them). Collect over months all the little bits and pieces (Kinder surprise egg toys, oddly shaped things you find in the garden, plastic spoons, etc etc etc). When you have enough take an old mirror or picture frame and superglue all these odds around it, however they fit. Then spray the lot, ideally with silver or gold metallic paint or any other colour you like. Voila, all these useless things look superb as an individual piece of art!
Three years, six months, three weeks, 13 hours, 48 minutes and 30 seconds. 26011 cigarettes not smoked, saving $11,704.80. Life saved: 12 weeks, 6 days, 7 hours, 35 minutes.
  • Plastic mushroom containers - the ones supermarkets sell their mushrooms in
Rather flimsy but I've found various uses for them, including:
    - in the workshop
    - as drawer dividers, especially for socks and stationery
  • Save those little net bags you get with some tablet detergents and put your tail end bars of soap in them. It's brilliant to use in the shower.
Remember the floss you buy every time you go to the dentist? Use it up at Christmas when tying up the turkey!
Want to recycle Yellow Pages? Leave them in a public telephone booth and they soon get nicked! Brilliant or what?
