digital pvr question

Options
I have freeview on my tv and want to buy a box that records any of the digital channels I receive. I am confused with the choice as the majority of the boxes have freeview 'built in'. Will this complicate things (as my tv already has it) OR should I be buying a box with freeview plus digital recorder? I see I can choose a box which has 320 or 500gb memory but I need help with the choice of freeview in it (or not!)

many thanks Moneysavers!!

All boxes have freeview and have to have it as they record from that not from the TV itself. Even old-style video recorders had their own receiver albeit it was only the terrestial channels then.

If you bought a PVR to record FROM the freeview in your telly, you would only be able to record the channel you're watching, and would only be able to record when the TV was on, which is no use to man nor beast (especially those who want to record programmes overnight).

Get a Freeview PVR, and while it's recording one channel, you can watch another on your TV. The PVR has to use its own built in Programme Guide for setting timed recordings as well....

All modern PVR's have twin tuners built in, either Freeview or Freesat, depnding on the platform for which they are intended.
As above, it's a common misapprehension that they record from the TV-they don't. The TV is only required to display the recordings made by the internal tuners.
All you need to pick is the platform, the hard drive size, and (if Freeview) whether you want HD or SD. Go for a Humax regardless.

I concur, and if you are looking for catch up TV look at the Humax YouView box.

They are getting a little cheaper.

Other stores that pay UK taxes are available!

Same price at Richer Sounds, less a tenner or so off with a VIP Club voucher. So around £238.

I assume that the Amazon link is for the 500GB version, not the 1TB one?

Good point forgot about the 1Tb box. The model numbering is confusing, you'd have thought a T1000 would have a 1TB disk. ( All the better for defeating Arnie) the 1Tb is the T1010.

OP may like to know there is a YouView remote record app available, but ours is largely an Android family so we have not checked it out.

For most non-TV addicts, 500GB is more than enough recording space. Richer Sounds have a Humax 500GB recorder for £138, which looks like good VFM.
  • will the youview box plug into a freesat box?

im thinking of cancelling sky and have been give a freeview box (Bush BFSAT01HFD). I intend to connect the freesat box to the exisiting sky dish and get a prv to replace the sky+box.

No YouView is a terrestrial service.
What do you mean by plug in to a freesat box???

In the past there have been Harddrive and DVD recorders that had the capability to record from any video signal. I know, I have one.

However, the trend now is for PVRs to record in their native formats, directly from the incoming TV signal. These recorders tend not to have the capability to record from any other video signal. And therefore you would not be able to connect a Freesat receiver to one for the purposes of recording.
