My gripe is dispatch and service used were not communicated to me correctly
Ok the despatch may have been a little slow but as for service used, they did communicate it with you,it was free P+P,could have been sent by courier pigeon for all you know...lol
As a seller i get alarmed when someone "asks" for tracking on something that is sent with free P+P,sorry but it screams scammer(just my opinion) As for the royal mail tracked i didn't think you could mark something tracked without a tracking number

i agree that marking anything as dispatched before it has actually been posted is being economical with the truth. i wouldn't dream of doing this on either ebay or amazon. to excuse this action as being easier/necessary for your own filing system, is absurd.
i'd have no problem marking this seller down a star or two for using an alternative service. you paid for royal mail and got another. since you are obviously in a quandary about it, and if i was too, i'd contact seller direct for an explanation. perhaps they made a genuine error in a mad xmas dash?0 -

They didn't pay for royal mail,....it was free P+P,that can be anything(sellers discretion)

It doesn't work like that. If you offer free post and packing the postage method is still shown, so it's not at sellers discretion, it will be what is stated in the postage box.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I think you've got the wrong end of the stick- dispatch email said posted Royal Mail tracked (and RM Tracked was also stated in the listing text) , no number given.
I asked for the number a few days later because I like to track things myself, so I know when to expect them.
This is where I was then told it had only just been sent Collect+.
So I did not ask for a particular service, I paid and then the seller sent.0 -
Made that mistake once myself, sent OH off with 14 packages to post whilst I sat at home and marked them all as dispatched. On the way to the PO a lady was knocked down on front of him and he stopped to comfort her whilst an ambulance came and by doing this missed the PO closing time.
When he came home he was busy telling me all about the accident and it was only the following morning that he told me he was 'off to the post office as the packages are still in the car boot'.
I emailed every customer to explain what had happened and all were fine except for one who like the OP accused me of misleading, lying, etc.

I've just started using the Post Office at my out of town shopping centre is open on Sunday. Really busy and really useful if I have lots of parcels. I've come home and marked as dispatched. Twice I've had contact from buyers questioning how I have dispatched on a Sunday. One was concerned because she had paid for RM and she thought I had used a courier. If not delivered this would have meant a 20 mile trip to the depot whereas only 2 miles to the PO.
I sent them the web address of the PO showing opening hours. I have noticed on my dash board I'm down to 4.79 for dispatch (on 3 months) (12 months is 4.90) and I'm wondering if buyers have marked me down because they think I'm lying about Sunday dispatch. I am fanatical about always posting same or next day so the low score really bugs me.
OP - If it comes soon I'd be happy enough. To leave less than 5* I'd be waiting 3 weeks, completely not as described or worse. Life is too short to stress. We just don't know what happens in other peoples lives, a smile costs nothing, stars cost nothing, but might make or break someone's day.
My OH died leaving me with 6 pre-school children. That was/is stress, stars are not.

I asked the seller politely for an explanation but they have declined to reply, so I have no way of knowing if it was a genuine mix-up etc.
All I know is I was initially misinformed of dispatch and method, and while I am happy with other aspects of the sale, I am not happy about that and the fact the seller hasn't bothered to let me know why. Hence why I am considering the comms star score.0 -

I so agree with you and feel for your loss.0 -
Wow....all this over a few stars?! OK so I think everyone reading this gets what your trying to say, but you are taking this way to seriously. OK so they made a mistake and have not replied yet....annoying? Yes! Uubuisness like? Possibly. How do you know something hasn't happened to the seller?
I would put something like - "comms could be better, but item as described" leaving the transaction as positive (thats if the item is as described)
I appreciate you have put this out thier for opinions and it seems like you genuinely not sure what to do about the stars situation, but I think if you listen to the advice given so far - its not to be so harsh and go into over thinking all this - the thing that gets me was that is was free postage as well!!
Christmas is over and the New Year beckons.....perhaps you can let this one go as an 'oversight'0
