Absolutely agree, hardly ever post, but hate the horrible generalisations! There are many NHS hospitals that are doing fantastically well. It is a public service after all, it's like most of our schools are below average, don't generalise.

tell me then why di so many elderly people die of starvation & thirst while in a nhs hospital?

What utter rubbish and complete a complete generalization.

Most of my family have been in hospital for various things over the years and we have never experienced any problems at all from several different hospitals.

Just because you and yours haven't had bad experiences doesn't mean that no-one else has

People are talking of their own experiences. Doesn't make it any less valid because you haven't been unlucky enough to have been in tht position

Because tragic mistakes do happen, and I agree it is absolutely disgraceful, but there are ten of thousands of Elderly that are looked after really well on a free national health service under pressure to deliver everyday. I understand the personal anguish but you are then slagging off every hospital, therefore every nurse, doctor etc. just not an accurate statement. A number of bad experiences does not give you the right to a sweeping ridiculous putting down of the NHS

This thread is great because everybody has their own point of view.
Something as emotive as the nhs will undoubtedly ruffle a few feathers, but...............please remember everyone has a right to their views and try to put your point in a diplomatic way so as to not upset anyone.
Some of the comments in the last few minutes have been far too strong, remember this thread is great bec ause we are all tolerant of others, regardless of if we agree..

I can only comment on the service in the Royal Gwent in Newport and St Woolos rehab unit. They are disgusting in the services they provide in many areas not just for the elderly. I am not saying that the Drs and nurses do it on purpose, I agree that underfunding plays a large part but the incompetence there was horrific. My mum was moved to St Woolos for rehab from the Gwent (mainly because they wanted the bed) it is horrid in there, the staff cannot meet the needs of the elderly patients, they are left lying in their own urine and excrement for long periods, meals they cannot feed themselves with are left on the tables untouched as they aren't given assistance. The last time I visited my mother there she was complaining of problems with her breathing and vision, the nurses just said she was over anxious, I insisted on a Dr, unbelievably even though it is called a hospital there is no dr onsite so a call was placed for a dr to come. I settled mum as best as I could stayed for a while and checked that a dr was definitely coming, The next morning I phoned to see how she was and was told she was quite unwell, I asked what the dr had said and was told the dr hadn't been able to make it. I rushed to St Woolos to find my mum unconscious and they then made arrangements to transfer her by emergency ambulance to the Gwent. She never recovered and was badly treated at the Gwent until her death on March 17. You can say this is just one of those things, that other hospitals are better but I don't care this was my experience of how the NHS work when you need them most.

Disregarding the awful treatment of my mum, my brother was in recently with pneumonia and when they couldn't get his antibiotic drip needle in they went away and didn't bother with any of his antibiotics for the rest of day and evening 'they forgot' only my SIL chasing them round got the medication given to him. He is type 2 diabetes and they were giving him food and desserts not meant for diabetics when his sugar levels were unstable, really high around 17.

You can say not all hospitals / staff are like this but when you experience such awful treatment of a loved one it is hard to be objective.

Hard subject not to be too emotional over, I agree with the above and will end my discussion of it here. x

No need for rubbishing anyone else's posts. They feel how they feel the same way as you feel your thoughts. Maybe simply put your view or skim over if you don't like rather than upset unnecessarily. :)
