Feeling a tad demotivated at the moment following a rather frank conversation with DH last night about the pro's and con's of having savings while paying off debt.
I'm of the opinion that so long as we have a big enough emergency pot in case the car blows up or the washing machine goes caput that any extra money should be paid off the debt. He is of the opinion that we should pay the minumum on the debts and then split our excess income 50/50 between savings and overpayments.
My way will have us debt free by at least Xmas this year, if not before. His way will have us debt free at some point in 2015.
I'd appreciate your opinions on this?

Win, we don't have any emergency savings, instead all our spare money goes towards debt and if something pops up we'll just stick it on the cc. We'd much rather get rid of the debt as soon as we can, although I'd love to have that safety net. Also another problem with us normally if we've got money stashed away it doesn't tend to stay there very long

Hmmm we took cash with us for our weekly shop today, we've come back with 4 bags of goodies and overspent on our £50 budget!!! £8.40 on a BIG bag of veg at the farmers market, but spent £54.34 before discounts in Mr S eep!!! The thing I'm most annoyed about is having to buy baked beans because I didn't realise we'd run out, had I known we were on our way out I'd have bought some the other week from l1dl. Very, very cross they just cost me £2.55 and I think they might even be on offer in mr T just over the road from us. I'm half tempted to go and have a look but I'm too cross now we've bought them!
Saying that though, I have just told the OH we are not buying anymore groceries this week and he has agreed. We have everything we need in the house including puff pastry for a lush tomato slice thing I make om nom nom and the elephant friend that crashed over last night has cleaned our kitchen for us to say thank you and sorry for making loads of noiseDiary: Getting back on track for 2013 and beyondDEBT FREE 13-10-13 :dance::dance::dance::dance:

I hate that! We always buy something then find it was cheaper elsewhere. Argh!0

Hmm. Wondering if I should go for a Saturday or evening job during the Summer. I work 39 hours a week at the moment but I also study part time too, so I don't have the energy for another job. I finish in June until October though and I'm wondering if it'd be a good idea to get a 2nd job for a bit more money.... Decisions, decisions. The tax rate puts me off a bit though.
What are people's thoughts on working more than one job?0 -
I work more than 1 job and find its great to get debt down quicker and/or use it for your extra pocket money so you don't feel the pain as much whilst paying debts back.
I too also work a 40 hour week and also do a 3rd job ad hoc too!

I agree, if you have any available credit on a card, its better to pay off than save any and use the cards in an emergency. You've alread done the maths, you know it makes a massive difference.
My husband is exactly the same about it, but he pays so little attention to our bank account that I just do want I want anyway and pay it off the cards:xmastree:POMDB Xmas 2013 Board - Paid off £12k in 2012 :j:j :xmastree:

I'm thinking the same thing. I have an annual part time teaching contract where 2/3 of my hours are worked by end of Jan. From Feb I have 3 free days a week and during school hols I am free all week (kids now late teens) so I wondered whether to find extra work to shift debt quicker and then save a contingency. I know what you mean about tax but what I would get net pay is still more than I have now!! I did think of temping (I teaching accounting) but that may only be feasable in the summer.
I suppose you have to decide how much your time is worth to youFebruary 2021 GC £301.45 / £300.00
March 2021 GC £266.41 / £280.00
April 2021 GC £53.19 / £300.000 -
Found a free Country Park near us I never knew about, we fed the ducks and played pooh sticks, not a penny spent! Very pleased, will be using that as a child entertainment tool rather than the nearby farm park. :money::xmastree:POMDB Xmas 2013 Board - Paid off £12k in 2012 :j:j :xmastree:

What jobs do you work? I work in an office 9-5 at the moment so that's quite handy. I'm not sure what sort of job I'd do, I'm only really good at admin!0
