    #110 muppets £197.20 / £5000

Can I please up my target to £5000

Last week my boyfriend and I signed new contracts at work, these contracts are till the end of the year, so happy we got these new contracts as our old contracts were due to end today. We have both managed to get a few more hours added into our contracts.. Hoping to be able to pay an extra £350 per month towards my debts.

You're all going to shout at me but on Tuesday I'm going to be adding another £430 to my debt because I NEED a new laptop. However on Thursday I will be paying £325 off! So really only like adding £105 on.

Does anyone feel like, other than being DF, they don't have much to look forward to??? :o being DF is an achievement in itself but feel like there's not much else to look forward to doing, so i'm constantly stuck in a cycle of being bored of now, looking to what is next.

I totally know what you mean about this. I am so focused on clearing all our debts that I am in a strange way worrying about when we have achieved it. What do we do then?!

Spagbol, please can you update me to show a new overall total. I have had to spend on my card this month, so my total to pay off has increased :(

  • Just back from drinks with friends; do you guys not sometimes wonder at people who haven't discovered MSE yet? I keep telling them, but no one listens...

Do any of you find it tough being around people that don't watch their cash in the same way?

BTW spag can you please round up my total to #141 £740/3250 - thanks!!

I am glad it is not just me who experiences this! I just find it really frustrating that tips or advice I try to give people falls on deaf ears, as I hate the thought of people spending more than they have to on things! They sort of "glaze over" when I tell them cashback sites, voucher sites etc that could save them heaps of money in the long term.

For example, my "new" furniture I mentioned earlier in this thread was actually preloved, but is John Lewis furniture so is AMAZING quality, and so beautiful I just love it. But if I say I have done this to those I work with, all they focus on is the "secondhand" part, not the fact that I got amazing quality furniture that will last ages for less than it would cost me for not as good quality brand new furniture that they would rather have than the "shock horror shame" of buying secondhand! I just think you should always try and get the best you can for the money you have available, but always struggle to get others to see it! Not sure if I am making any sense here!

I do find it hard to cope with people who aren't as careful with their money, and it always amazes me how they manage to make me feel silly for being so careful (tight in their words) with the money we do have. I just find it frustrating ultimately, as no good ever comes of living beyond your means, we learnt that the hard way and are determined never to be in the position we are in now ever again.

I have experienced people looking at me gone out when I say we don't use credit cards anymore, and that we don't take out loans to buy cars etc.

I am waffling on now, but I hope everyone understands what I mean!

newlywed I know what you mean. People will compliment a lot of my 'going out' tops, and I'll be the first to say 'isn't it great? I got it in the charity shop'. To begin with, they all asked if I should be admitting to that, then they became jealous at what nice things I could find! Just invite them round to see your furniture, their attitude will change quickly!

I recommend a lot of things like cash back, buy I think a lot of friends feel like by using them, they're accepting they're bad with money or admitting that they're poor. Being skint seems to be fashionable, but phrase it any other way, and it's stigmatised!

I totally agree about the telling people about bargains and deals thing. A work colleague wants a new mobile and refused point blank to go through quidco. Surely it's good to get over £100 cash back for doing something that you were going to do anyway?

She said she wants to go to a shop to get it???

There are some people who just don't want to be helped I suppose!

There's always the next target, or goal and it can be as big or small as you like.

When I completed this challenge last year I already knew what I wanted to achieve, in order:

    • Buy a new laptop (for my self-employed work).
    • Save a house deposit (see my sig ;))
    • Build up a 6-9 month emergency fund in case of job loss.
    • Overpay mortgage/pension.
    • Stop working as early as possible!

I'm sure smaller things for the kids (such as uni, first car etc.) will also be put into the mix as the time gets nearer, but I like knowing where I'm going (financially) for the long term.
    I was a DFW, now I'm a MFW :T
