I'm hardly what you'd call old but I do remember when bin collections were weekly; the bin men would walk round the back of the house, pick up the bins, take them to the wagon and empty them, then replace them round the back of the house and put the lids back on. These were heavy metal bins, too. Now collections are every two weeks and they don't even return the wheely bins to outside the house, they just leave them in a group at the end of the street.

The recycle lot are even worse. I left the bottles and papers in their boxes outside my gate on the correct day and they didn't bother to pick them up. I rang the council that day and they said the collectors "may or may not" come back around within 48hrs, and if they did they" may or may not" empty the boxes. I asked why they couldn't just collect them, as per their job description, and the reply was that sometimes they miss them. When I explained that they'd already missed them and I was ringing to rectify that matter I just got the same reply - they might pick them up and they might not. In the event, they opted for the latter so I tipped the whole lot into the landfill bin and no longer recycle anything.

On the upside we're supposed to have a landfill waste collection tomorrow but it remains to be seen if they turn up.

OK, had bins collected on Tuesday (18th Dec) have just found out that they aren't going to be collected again until Tuesday 8th Jan (f!"£$%^g council!!!!).

The council should do something about it! They shouldn't have allowed Christmas Day and New Year's Day to both fall on a Tuesday.

So it's fine to make the refuse collectors work over the holiday?

Absolutely yes, I pay for the bloody service so I want it done.

    What's so wrong with that?

    We have alternate weekly collections.

The main bin was last emptied on 18th December, and will not be emptied again until 15 January.

It will not get emptied on 1st January as its a public holiday, and they do not reschedule - in the words of our council its "tough".

Furthermore, they won't empty the bin if the lid is not closed, so there will be huge queues around the dump, and fly tipping everywhere.

For this wonderful service, we pay nearly £2,800 a year.
