  • Ok I'm trying mine for the first time ever today. It was a wedding present and I've been dying to use it since we set up the list months ago.

I've got drunken beef on the go, it is a recepie from the slow cooker cook book I bought to get me started. I've also got a couple of potatoes in tin foil in there in the hope we can have jacket potato with it - fingers crossed it works! I couldn't do all the prep it recommends in the receipe as I'm out at work and had to leave it to do its thing so just bunged it all in and hoped for the best... :)

Wish me luck and I'll report back tomorrow! If it is ok I might try a chilli receipe or I might just do an improvised curry or sausage casserole. Or I've got some leeks so if anyone can give me any tips on leek and potato soup I might give that a bash, I've done that on the hob before but I'm not sure what I'd need to do to do the same in the slow cooker. Just bung it all in and leave it? I know that if I add cream I have to do this right at the end, any other tips?

    Thanks

I have Liver & Bacon in mine today. Have made it before and it's lovely. I was never really keen on Liver before I tried this recipe but it comes out lovely and is great served with Mash Potatoes. Even my kids love it!

Can anyone recommend a good slow cooker cookbook?

I have some of the books mentioned already but the one I find I use the most is one called Slow Cooking Properly Explained by Dianne Page. Some of the other books I have contain more "fancy" recipes that you wouldn't necessarily use in every day cooking, especially when your cooking for kids!
  • Sorry to say but ClootiesDad was most unimpressed with yesterday's effort of lamb cutlets & stuff :(.

So today I'm going for Caribbean Chicken from page 1 of this thread. Wish me luck......

I have one or two tucked away somewhere, but I usually end up changing the recipes. I tend to do a google for recipes, which always gets good results. A lot can be adapted, even if not designed for slow cooking

    Hi there,

I've not got anything in the slow cooker today as I am going out this evening but thought I'd report back on the drunken beef.

DH loved it, he is fussy about meat and thought that the tenderness of the meat was amazing - that is great because I had a battle to persuade him that the slowcooker was worth getting and wouldn't just clutter the kitchen.

Everything worked ok but, I thought the sauce was a bit carrotty, will use less carrot next time, or at least use larger chunks so they don't break down and I can give most of them to DH. I also wonder if stout rather than bitter would have been better in the sauce, there was a slightly metallic taste to the sauce which at first I thought might have been from the tin foil but I think was probably the beer.

Quick question, i did jacket potatoes in there wrapped in tin foil and on the little rack above the meat and sauce, they cooked through but the skins were soggy and not very nice, worse than if done in the microwave. Is there a way to avoid this or is it just what happens if you slow cook jacket spuds???

So next project will be an improvised curry I think on thursday!
