I don't know if this idea would be of any use to anyone or not but here goes.
I bought a couple of small casserole dishes yesterday from Poundland. I thought they would be big enough to make a one portion meal in to serve on a plate alongside some veg, spuds etc. and they look cute.
They are 12cm in diameter (not inc the handles) and 6cm deep.
I was wondering if anyone would be able to make use of them in their slow cooker, perhaps cook two seperate dishes at the same time?
i`ve done this several times with similar dishes - works a treat. I do always throw in some boiling water from the kettle to make sure that it dosen`t dry out though. If i`m making something like stew i sink a dish of cabbage into the mixture to cook, bit messy but saves having the hob on

This is a really inspiring thread, and I was hoping that you could help me. I love to use my slowcooker, but Hubby always complains that everything I cook in it all tastes the same, and its all really bland. I add herbs, onions, stock, garlic etc etc, but somehow it just never tastes fantastic. I really want to make good use of my slowcooker this winter by producing fab meals, not bland ones!
Thanks x0 -

Me too, I have a couple of cake recipes for the SC that says to cook in similar way, put upturned plate at bottom of pot, stand dish on top, add water to 2/3rd up side and cook, works fine.0 -
I'm so excited! I got a (small) slow cooker at a boot fair last weekend for a fiver and yesterday I got to have my first attempt at using it.
Going by some of the basic recipes I've accumulated (mainly from this site!) I put in diced new potatoes, carrots, leek and sliced onions, with chicken thighs and drumsticks on top and some stock, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavour of the potatoes, particularly, was so much more intense than a normal stew done on the stove! I put in far too much stock so I now have almost a pint of lovely thick stock sitting in the fridge waiting to be used too! Also one portion of soup from the veggies we didn't manage to eat, whizzed up with some of the stock. Very happy with it and looking forward to my next experiment! :-)I'm broke, not poor. Poor sounds permanent, broke can be fixed. (Thoroughly Modern Millie)

Hi Diana,
I have found that the long cooking process does tend to make any spices etc blander the longer you cook it, I remember my first attempt at a chicken jalfrezi and my OH thought it was a stew :rotfl:
Now I put the herbs and spices in at the end of cooking which makes all the difference.

In my slow cooker today is chilli con carnie.
Minced beef, tin of chopped tomatoes, diced onion, mushrooms. No kidney beans(not keen on them). chilli powder, salt, pepper, garlic powder, oregano.
I am going to cook on the stove boil in the bag rice and offer some tortilla wraps around. If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

I've got both of my slow cookers on today.
For the men of the house, it's beef casserole. Couple of pounds of braising steak, some chestnut mushrooms, a few carrots, onion, garlic, herbs and a bottle of Hobgoblin ale.
For me, a large batch of ratatouille as Lidl were selling aubergines and courgettes cheaply and I had a bag of tomatoes from my in-laws' greenhouse!
I'll do mash, and to go with my ratatouille, I'm going to have falafel. Nom nom!0
