Pataks pastes for me for curries too. They are hard to beat, and not cheating as they are a paste of the main ingredients rather than a sauce. I usually end up adding some extra garlic, onion, ginger, coconut, tomato, to give an extra zing (as it must lose something in the processing, but to be honest I usually do this anyway), but its still a quick method to make all sorts of curry.

Had some curry goat made with pataks the other day. Delicious!
I absolutely agree with you that Pataks pastes make great curries. I use a quarter of a jar for a large curry and add whatever else takes my fancy. I have a 4.5L sc and so do large batches at a time.

My store cupboard always includes: garam masala; coriander; ground cumin; tumeric and coconut blocks for making curries - and my fridge always has jars of chopped ginger, garlic and chilli.

It really is a case of experiment, and trial and error.

'curry goat' are you serious? or am I missing something here?

I am using my slow cooker for the first time today!
It is a Tesco 3.3 L. I am cooking a sausage casserole. Pork sausages, sliced onion, red pepper, chopped tomatoes, mushrooms, salt, sage, black pepper, marjoram & parsley.

I grilled the sausages on George F to brown and in it all went with 1pt of cold water. I switched it on @10am on high and have now just turned it on to low an hour later. We plan to eat @ 5.30. is this OK?

I have not put the mushrooms in yet! do I add them @ 4.30?

    Thanks for all help.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.

That should be plenty of time, sounds delish.

As for the mushrooms its up to you really, I usually add them at the beginning cos it saves time and I would forget if I left them out, Good luck

My SC has chicken wings in one and will have a sausage casserole in the other later for tomorrows lunch. Will serve the wings as a starter and the sausage casserole in giant HM yorkshire puds, Mmmmmm

Thanks for the advice and will put the mushrooms in @ the begining next time.

Your sausage casserole sounds good with the large yorkshire puddings, I did not think of that!

    I've been Money Tipped!
I don't know if this idea would be of any use to anyone or not but here goes.

I bought a couple of small casserole dishes yesterday from Poundland. I thought they would be big enough to make a one portion meal in to serve on a plate alongside some veg, spuds etc. and they look cute. ;)

They are 12cm in diameter (not inc the handles) and 6cm deep.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to make use of them in their slow cooker, perhaps cook two seperate dishes at the same time?

I'm not sure what size my slow cooker is but it does fit a 1.5kg chicken in it if that is any help.

  • Rice pudding or to be exact flaked rice pudding. Very yummy and creamy. Much easier than in the oven or on the hob as it doesn't boil over.

It wouldn't be very efficient because the slow cooker heats up all around the sides (at least mine does) and you'd be wasting all that heat. Worse than that, without liquid in the main casserole dish, it could well overheat and crack.

Having said which, if you filled the main crock with water about halfway up the sides of the little dishes, it might just work. A sort of slow cooker bain marie. But it's your slow cooker you're risking...
