Cooked my usual stew today in my sc, except that I added a bit of finely chopped celery. Oh that was tasty...
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
  • Oh Shelbel! Poor you! It's all trial and error, don't be put off. Things like barley and oats just need a sprinkle. Slow cooker meals are typical watery because nothing evaporates, they are designed for the steam to recondense back into the pot, thus not allowing stuff to dry out and burn whilst you are out.

What I do is one of two things. Either I let it cook watery which ensures root veg really boil thoroughly and then thicken for the last half an hour when I get in from work, using a couple of heaped tsp cornflour made into a paste with milk. Or else I start the casserole with a sprinkle of barley and lentils or flour the meat before it goes in.

Just have fun finding out what works and don't be upset. You only have to search for my chocolate chilli disaster - twas horrible!!

You can also leave the lid off for half an hour to let the liquid reduce. Defeats the object but works too.

Is this it? I hope the original poster doesn't mind :D

    Hi Shelly 3774,
I don't mind at all... although another poster said she uses pudding rice and nutmeg.
I used long grain rice and mixed spice and it was yummy will defo be making that again.:p
  • This morning it's chicken stew in the SC. Diced chicken thighs with lots of veg and broth mix, barley, HM chicken stock and wine, herbs etc. It is huge! I hope it's nice. DD1 says "I'm sick of stews!" - and I haven't made one since before Christmas!

Just came in after my nightshift and put in lemon chicken
    5x chicken legs skin removed
    2xcloves of garlic crushed
Juice of 1 lemon then the zest also added
Good inch of ginger finely sliced
    1 onion roughly chopped
    2 big knobs of butter

This is one of our favourites ends up all sticky.Goes lovely with rice or noodles and very little work for me YEAH !!

  • Lemon chicken sounds lovely - would it work on a chicken breast? (DH very wierd about meat on bone!)

Not having much success with DD eating things made in slow cooker. Guess she'll just be hungry!

    Hi flat mouse
Yes it does work with chicken breast ,i ve done it lots of times with all chicken cuts (just whatevers cheapest at the time.)
Have you tried her with tomato based things ,tends to be a hit with children because its a familiar taste.

  • Well the sausage casserole last night wasn't a hit with her (definitely tomato based and she LOVES sausages). Also the beef stew had a fair tomato input and that wasn't a success either.
Think it's just her eating issues! She's always been a PITA with food. Decides before she tries that she doesn't like it and then the stubborness kicks in (no idea where she gets that from ... ?)
I'll try some "less sauce" recipes - like your lemon chicken - see if they work.
    Thanks
