This morning it's diced pork seasoned with smoked paprika, onions and mushrooms in cider. When I get in from work, I'll slosh in a bit of double cream and thicken with a little cornflour.

    Can't wait.
  • This is my first post and I just wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to all the posters on this thread I have been reading for ages and I credit you with slashing my food budget by a third. Before I found this web site we were spending a couple of hundred on feed a week with loads of takeaways eating out and no meal planning meaning we would get in from work late and order takeways etc. I know meal plan and have a slow cooker all my meals are now planned for next four weeks and super healthy. Still in debt but am starting to work through it and main thing not getting into more debt and buying food from wages not on credit cards. sorry for rambling but just wanted to thank everyone for the slow cooker recipes and motivation you have all given me to drastically reduce food budget and sort out my life one step at a time... Thank you Mel
  • I cooked some ham in mine last week. I soaked it overnight, rinsed it and put a tin of peaches and the juice in with it.

    4 hours on high.

A £4 joint did sandwiches for 3 days and a dinner for 3 of us.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • It's got hot water and fairy liquid in it at the moment!
Made a bolognese on Monday with beef mince, half a jar of passata, lea and perrins, chopped and fried onion, herbs, beef oxo cube. Cooked on low all day and it was lovely to just have to boil some pasta for supper.
Made a lovely meal with the leftover passata last night, but didn't use my slow cooker, so better not post it here.
I've taken some beef out of the freezer for tomorrow night's supper (my Dad's a farmer and this beef is home reared Welsh Black beef) as I'm going to make Goulash. My brother went to Budapest and bought me back a spice mix, so I'm going to try the following:

diced beef (best steak apparently :j according to the butcher)
    chopped onions
5 tsps paprika (in the spice pack)
1 chopped chilli pepper (in the spice pack)
    water
    salt & pepper
    chopped carrots
    chopped parsnips
5g caraway seeds (in the spice pack)
5 tsps 'Gulyaskrem' (in the spice pack)

I'm going to fry the onions, brown the beef and briefly boil the carrots and swede. Add the spices etc, water to cover and leave it on low all day - what do you think?
I'm planning on serving it with mash.
    Cymru am Byth!

Oh Shelbel! Poor you! It's all trial and error, don't be put off. Things like barley and oats just need a sprinkle. Slow cooker meals are typical watery because nothing evaporates, they are designed for the steam to recondense back into the pot, thus not allowing stuff to dry out and burn whilst you are out.

What I do is one of two things. Either I let it cook watery which ensures root veg really boil thoroughly and then thicken for the last half an hour when I get in from work, using a couple of heaped tsp cornflour made into a paste with milk. Or else I start the casserole with a sprinkle of barley and lentils or flour the meat before it goes in.

Just have fun finding out what works and don't be upset. You only have to search for my chocolate chilli disaster - twas horrible!!

Cheers ;) been slow cooking for years and this is the first mishap, so that's not bad. Was rushing around so wasn't thinking straight when I threw the oats in.

  • Oh that's good. I misread your post - thought you were saying it was your first time using the slow cooker LOL. One mishap is a bloomin fantastic track record. I did a chicken cacciatore that people just plain didn't like ... and I went to bed sulking LOL!

I browned a pork chop, popped into the slow cooker with a few sliced chestnut mushrooms, sliced baby onions a can of campbells condensed celery soup (i then added a chicken stock) and a soup cans worth of boiled water, a pinch of mixed herbs and cracked back pepper. Never made this before so I am hoping it tastes ok. Not sure what i'll have with it.

I messed up dinner today :( first time ever with my SC!

Think I threw in too many oats though as when i got in at tea time it was ridiculously thick and looked like vomit.

Very sorry, but made me laugh out loud (not the messed up dinner bit but your wording;) )

PS-I've got rice pudding in my SC (1st time)as per recipe on this thread....not sure how long it's suppose to take....

I cook it in my slow cooker for about 6 hrs on low. I have just tossed the mint and apricots in. It smells gorgeous.
