Minor incident but im not insured!

Yesterday I borrowed a friends pickup in order to move something but the item I was carrying came loose and did some damage to vehicle travelling behind me. Nothing serious and thank god no one was hurt.

Before I took the truck my friend and I checked our policies to see that we were both comprehensively insured and agreed that I would be covered 3rd party on his truck. We both believed that that was the case with all comprehensive policies.

Ive now spoken to my insurer who has confirmed that I am not covered to drive any other vehicle and sure enough this is stated in my policy. I have also found that my friend could be charged as he did not ensure that I was adequatly covered before letting me take the vehicle.

Although we both acted in good faith we now feel we are in real pickle. Can anyone suggest a good course of action to minimise the penalty for this mistake?

Pay the third party using your own money before anything else. Satisfying the third party losses will mitigate any penalty. If the police are aware then prepare a defence if you get charged and appear in court.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

I should have mentioned. A passing bobby suggested to the third party that she should contact her insurance company. I had already suggested I would pay for the damage and despite desperately trying to get hold of her today when I did get speak to her she had already got to here insurer.

Is it too late now that it is "in the system"? I was afraid that I could find myself paying for the damage and also finding myself in schtook.

Do we really have no defence?

When the axe falls whats the likely outcome?

If the police get involved and prosecute 6-8 points each for you and your mate. He however may have special reasons not to endorse.

So yesterday your insurance policy that you checked said your were insured and today it said you aren't ????

Never assume with insurance always read the small print, now both the OP and the friend are liable to be prosecuted for no insurance and allowing a vehicle to be driven with no insurance...

Looks like we're both going to learn that the hard way. We both assumed that comprehensive cover entitles you to 3rd party on other comprehensively insured vehicles. We only checked that we both comprehensively covered.

    How old are you?

Whats the reason they won't cover you?

Whether you are allowed to drive other vehicles is quite plain and near the 1st lot of text on my policy.
