I doubt it was a utility bill error. Unless they stormed inside your house without your permission and refused to leave you can't convict them for trespass. Knocking on your front door to ask for payment is not trespass. How were you threatened? Did they threaten to assault you? Can you prove it? Demanding for payment on the belief they have evidence you owed money does not qualify as threatening behaviour.
It was a utility bill error - three times admitted by British Gas - and the compensation they paid me was more than a years bills!. They were told to leave and refused, which is trespass. They threatened to enter the property and seize goods without a warrant. They attempted to physically intimidate me. I proved it because they were arrested, and spent a very uncomfortable period in the cells. I know the law on debt, thank you.0 -

British Gas periodically sic debt collectors onto me for a debt run up by tenants who left the house over eight years ago - before I even bought the place!
As a customer of British Gas for over 30 years I have never once experienced a single error on my utility bill.0 -

Well good for you!

Did you call the police in the presence of the aggressors? Fear and desperation can easily take over a debt collector, triggering possible violent outcomes. You're fortunate they waited for the police to arrive. Personally I would never place myself in harm's way. A quick phone call to British Gas should remove the debt collectors from your property safely and you can inform the police later.0 -

Excellent. And after 30 years as a British Gas customer I expect them - AS THEY DID - to recognise an error in the transfer of accounts on moving home. The bill of £18 was NEVER mine. It was, at best, a bill for the former occupant. Who made a mistake and transposed two numbers on their final reading. And which British Gas accepted was the case - either the former occupant made the mistake or their customer advisor did. So explain to me, since you do not believe me, why BG paid £480 compensation to ee alongside their debt collectors from a firm in the Merrion Centre, Leeds spending the night in the cells?0 -

You have clearly never dealt with a debt collector, who have NO connection to the company they are collecting the debt on behalf of. British Gas knew and accepted on FOUR occasions that I owed them NOTHING. Fear and desperation are both irrelevent - when a deby collector without a warrant is told to leave your premises they are required by law to do so. I did not place myself in harms way at all - had they made any attempt to assault me on my premises, they would have seriously regretted it, within the legal definitions of "serious" and "regret". You have clearly bever tried getting through to BG in less than 20 minutes - and debt collectors work for franchised companies, not BG.
I inform the police of infringements of the law when they happen - not later.
Do you actually know what you are talking about - because there is no evidence here that you do.0 -

You don't seem to understand you placed yourself in harm's way. By calling the police in the presence of people who threatened you, you're taunting them to assault you to stop you from making that phone call. If they chose to assault you, the one who may seriously regret the confrontation is you. I do agree they've broken the law by threatening you but the way you handled the situation is dangerous.
Debt collectors are not employed by British Gas but a simple phone call to British Gas will sort out the mishap. They will look up your details on their system and British Gas will contact the debt collecting agency to remove the debt collectors. You're ignoring the fact the debt collecting agency is relying on information given to them by British Gas. Explaining the mistake on the utility bill to the debt collectors is an error in judgement. You chose the wrong audience to explain your situation to.0 -

Yep. They tell me that every time. Every time over the last eight years a variety of debt collectors have been told by British Gas that I owe them a debt of money.
A debt run up by someone who left before I even bought the house.
I temped for a while at a company which looks after meter readings for a number of power companies and British Gas' data management and quality was just hideous.
You may well be one of the few customers who have had excellent service from British Gas, but trust me, you have no idea what you're talking about. Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway... :huh:0
