Well, I've just been to the bank and paid off the money I've been saving all year towards my mortgage (£2800) :j :j Its the wierdest feeling, I feel sooo proud that I've managed to save it all but then a bit scared too ... it feels very final, like I can't get that money again! :o:o I do have other money in savings for emergencies and I know if I ws ever really stuck my parents would help me out, but it still feels dead grown up and a bit surreal :D:D
Right, off to start finding some more to save :D:D :rotfl:

  • Arghhhhh. The man from British Gas, he say my boiler is bad.

Any tips on here for fixing versus replacing, and who/what to go for? Obviously I'll be getting a second opinion as I wouldn't trust British Gas as far as I could throw them - they're estimating £1k for fixing (and probably last three years) or about £2.5 - £3k for a new one. This will make a dent in my mortgage-free ambitions...

  • i'm no expert at all, but is the quote for just a boiler or your whole central heating system.

i would have thought that 2-3k would cover the whole system and that you could get a boiler for less than 1k.....

i have just taken out one of BG's monthly plans (with a 15% discount) - reluctantly. but we have been trying to get someone to come and service the system/boiler for the past 18 months and people just don't ring back. this was the only way we could get someone round!
  • You can get a top of the range Potterton condensing boiler for £650, then you'd have to pay for fitting - which includes putting in a drain for the water. Get three quotes from local plumbers, who will be able to recommend the correct make and size for your home.

Whatever you do, don't use BG - rip off merchants.

We had a potterton when our cr*ppy 'ideal' boiler (which was only 6 yrs old at the time and put in by the builders) was replaced a couple of years ago. Been really pleased with the potterton and the gas bills are good. Our house is only 8 yrs old and heating is on 24/7 but controlled via the thermostat in the hall which is set to about 16/17 degrees. Over the summer quarter it cost £18! The monthly DD is for £28 (which I review every quarter to be sure we are not over paying) From memory it cost us about £1k to supply and replace with the potterton.
